The other night as I was saying goodnight to Lance and petting him, his paws were really raw. One paw is really bad and the others are getting worse.

I bought a comfy cone to stop the licking tonight, it has worked somewhat. He is tolerating it too. :) I am thinking maybe I should have gotten the clear one instead.

I am concerned about work in the morning. If we leave the cone off I am afraid he is going to do more damage to himself while I am at work. Wearing the cone with no one home is proabably not safe even if we gate him in the kitchen. This seems to be a no win situation. :(

Any advice would be greatley appreciated.

I don't know what to suggest for tomorrow...what can he do with the cone if you leave it on??? chew it or not walk??? I would suggest seeing if your vet has lickguard tomorrow as this has worked great for me and any time my Aussie starts licking almost anywhere I put it on...BUT not on open sores just around them. Vet wrap won't work I suppose he would probably just tear it off??? Good-luck and sorry I don't have any great answers!
I am thinking I am going to crate him whiile at work tommorrow. Hubby just suggested we should put socks on him...hehe...that wouldnt work cause he would just chew them off ! :O The cone is not a see through so I would want to supervise him with it on so he doesnt hurt himself. I am already kicking myself that I didnt get the inflatable e collar. The comfy collar seemed so comfy that I got him and it is but cant really see too well. :O He does get around it it pretty good with supervision though.
That sounds like a plan, socking him would only have him chew it off.

Is he obsessively biting and licking his paws? I am quite unsure what you mean by raw.
He is biting and licking his paws obbsessively as they really bother him, we had the collar on most of the night tonigt to prevent that and as soon as we took it off he was back at it again. :( By raw I mean it is really red and they hurt him when you touch his paws. :(
Vet wrap wont work because the licking occurs right on top of his paw.
Hope you can get something figured out today! Good Luck!
Thanks Jane :)
Does the dog have allergies? My dog does this as well. Usually he licks the paws on our couch and makes a mess.
The vet has never confirmed this is an allergy in my dog. I'm thinking bad nervous habit in a sense.
Lance has seasonal allergies. We went through this last year as well but it wasnt quite so bad. The vets said its a bad year for pet allergies. Has your vet given ou any ideas on what to do for him?
Awww poor Lance! :-(

I don't have an "at work" solution RE the cone, but since Lance and Silas are related, I wanted to mention some remedies that have worked for Silas. Check out my page for my conversation with Beth about Echo (I wrote more there about what we've experienced with Silas.) Lance may have allergies, food allergies, or yeast issues (Silas had/has all).

In the meantime for his paws: wet them down with a solution of apple cider vinegar + water. Listerine (regular formula) also helps to soothe paws. Hopefully this will help to keep the itching and inflammation down while you are at work. If I can think of anything else that might help keep him off his paws, I'll send you another quick note.

Silas sends Lance some TLC :-)
Updated: Lances paws look better this morning, not so red! I tried putting him in his crate last night but that didn't stop the chewing, he could still reach his paws. :( But the good news is that they did look better after waking up this morning.

We have Lance on Natural Balance and Duck and Potatoe Limited Ingredient for allergies. Right now I believe it is his seasonal allergies acting up though. I have been putting neosporin on his paws to and it seems to help.

Lance doesnt like walking in wet grass either, I wonder if that has something to do with the grass bothering his paws?

I will have to try the apple cider vinegar and water Carolyn. Do you use straight Listerine? Thank You for the suggestions and TLC. :)
Hi Natalie!

Here's some more info for you:

For the apple cider vinegar, use 50% vinegar + 50% water. You can also mix a little ACV with his drinking water.
For the Listerine, yup, straight. Just make sure it is the regular kind (not mint, etc.) Spray or dab on. It will REALLY help with the itching.

You can also use a baking soda paste (1 teaspoon backing soda + water) and rub it into the paws.
Bathing followed by a baking soda "rinse" also helps.

And... last but not least, there are also drops called Ox-E drops that you mix with water. They have done wonders for Silas' red and itchy areas :-)
