I'm curious...
On average, during the work week, how many hours does your dog spend alone (without humans)?
Where does your dog spend that time? At liberty (home or yard) or confined (to a room, pen, or crate).
How old is your dog?
I don't want any stones to be thrown, I'm just looking to see what reality is. So if you'd rather not publish your information, send me a private message and I'll compile the data.

Well, I telecommute from home, so my dogs are with me most of the day, except when I'm out running errands, meetings..etc. so may be 12-14 hrs alone per week? They are confined in my master bathroom, tile floor. My dogs are 6-7 y/o. I don't let them roam free alone because I take in fosters once - twice a month, it's for everyone's protection.

a couple of years ago when both of us worked 9-5, the dogs were alone for 8-10 hrs a day and they had free roam of our 2000 sqft 2 stories condo. They were both pups, crate trained until 1, then opened to kitchen only, then lower floor, then entire condo. We had tile in kitchen and bath, carpet in bedrooms and wood flooring throughout.

As a rule, the only time the dogs are alone, is on Sundays, when my husband and I go out to the Eagles (private club) for a couple of hours. When we work, I work days and my husband works nights. They have free range through the whole house. Duncan has pretty much from the time he came home. Right now with my husband laid off, they spend their time with him while he is puttering outside. Other than that, if not sleeping, just following me around the house.
my schedule is sun.-thurs. 4pm-12 am
cody lab mix 8yrs left free roam of house
Jordan tri-male 2yrs. left free roam of house
Teagen girl 4 months dropped off at my sister's to play with the golden's and picked up after work =)
Jordan also goe's to camp good puppy on mondays 7am-6pm my sis picks him up and drops him off at home for me =0
My boyfriend and I both get up at 5am and leave for work at 6:30. One of us is always home around 4pm.
Bear is crated during the day while we're gone (about 9.5 hours). So, about 42 hours a week I guess, I've never counted it before.
We got him when he was 8 weeks old and it's all he's ever known. He's never had an accident in his crate and often climbs in it during the evening while we're relaxing.
Nighttime is different - he used to be crated at night, about a month ago we started letting him sleep with us, he stays about an hour and then goes and gets in his crate.
Bear is 7 months old and that's his reality.

Once every 2 weeks my crew has a 10 hour day alone with 3 in the bedroom and 3 in the kitchen,hall/laundry room and bathroom. Other than that 1-2 go to work with me every day...they think if they wait by my car they will be the one's to go!!!
And maybe up to 4 hours some days ...but usually my husband or I are home or can stop home to let them out...I have fenced off my carpeted living room and tv room due to dog hair (saves alot of vacuming) and somday I would like to replace it with tile or some dog friendly easy to clean surface!
Tucker turned 1 in May.
My boyfriend and I both work full time but he is off Mondays and our schedules are a bit staggered...Tucker's alone schedule during the week usually looks like this:
Mon: --
Tues: 9 hrs
Weds: 7 hrs
Thus: 7 hrs
Fri: 6 hrs

Soo that is about 29 hrs. We leave him gated in the kitchen & mudroom and just started taking him to daycare on Wednesdays. Guess that will cut him down to 22 alone hrs/wk. I am so jealous of people who get to take their dogs to work!!
Champ- 2 1/2 year old German Shepherd/ Golden Retriever
Grissom- 10 month old Corgi

I get to take the boys to work with me, but often times I get busy after work wedding planning and volunteering at the shelter, which they can't join me. They probably spend about 12 hours a week by themselves. During this time they have access to outside, the covered patio, and the bedroom/garage. (half of our 6 car garage is converted into an entertainment area/ outside dining area/ bedroom. Doe not look NEARLY as ghetto as it sounds! and is fully air conditioned/ heated and whatnot)
Ella age 14 months old, is free to roam the house except bedrooms and bathroom during her "no human" time.
Time alone in house:
Weekends: 1 or 2 hours
Weekdays: Monday/Friday - 7 hours
Tuesday/Thursday - 5 hours
Wednesday - 1 hour or less
Since Mondays and Fridays are her "long days", I will sometimes take her to my dad's house to play. (my dad watches our son, so he will just tell me to bring Ella too so they can all play).
My Po's longest time alone is once a week when we're all at school/work, he's by himself for 4 hours, then one of us comes hime to let him out to pee at lunch, then he has another 3-4 hrs alone. He mostly sleeps when we're gone but we leave him lots of things to do to entertain himself (if only he could learn to clean his room, sigh)
Other than that there's typically someone with him. He'll either have free roam of the living room/kitchen (cannot be trusted in bedrooms, at 10 months he believes he has to steal and destroy something from a bedroom if he gets the chance) or be fenced into the kitchen- this is typically if we're doing something which he will interfere with (he's still a pup).
He'll sometimes be left alone if we're all out, say shopping. But we have a rule to try and not leave him alone for more than 4 hours at a time. Once he went from about 9 to 4 though and was fine.

So, to answer the original question would say between 8 to 12 hours, on average a week,
Sidney is 2; Bruce and Chester are about 14/15.

They are home alone about 5 hours, 4 days a week. The other days it varies but is never very long, except the occasional Disneyland day.

They now have free reign of the house, but not the yard (I worry about somebody stealing them). Sidney has a balcony patio for fresh air. When Sid was younger he was confined to the upstairs loft living room.
My Corgis are 1 year old and 6 months old. I work 5 days per week for 8 actual hours per day (6am to 2 pm). When I am at work the boys are confined to the back half of the house (kitchen, utility, dining room) and the backyard (dog door is always open for them). They are both completely housebroken but I keep them out of the front of the house because they chew books (I'm sure they are just trying to read them) and rugs. My backyard is securely fenced (6' cedar and chain link).
