I finally found a breeder that tests for degenerative myelopathy and I am absolutely thrilled. Not only do they test for DM, but they test for may other conditions like OFA, CERF, vWD, etc. I am getting my puppy the end of February and I can hardly wait!

The only reason you would have to test each pup to find out its status is if both parents aren't tested, carrier to carrier was bred, or carrier to at risk was bred...if a carrier to clear were bred you would have 50/50 carrier/clear and no reason to test for those pups are free of being at risk unless you were to use that pup for breeding in which case you would need to know its exact status as well...and clear with at risk produces all carriers so unnecessary to test pups since you know the result.  Most of Immer Essens adults are tested if not all of them but she is trying to keep clears for herself to continue a successful breeding program and be able to use at risk dogs that of ideal standard instead of petting them out since they are worth the offspring they produce.
Right, this is complex, but no more complex than Biology 101. Understand the genetics. Draw a few Punnett squares. Don't be put off if a breeder is not breeding only clears -- if the gene pool is restricted to the very small population of clears, that could be a well-meaning disaster.
Alice, DM is genetically linked and it seems the gene is fairly stable and not prone to spontaneous mutation. So unlike hips which are not a clear genetic link, but more a trend, DM is actually a disease and a dog should not get it if it is "clear" or "carrier".

I think there are some other threads around here addressing the legitimate reasons breeders are not testing, and I'd be happy to discuss in private message if you like but I don't want to hijack Andrea's thread. :-)

Andrea, I am very happy you were able to find a breeder who met your needs and will be getting your beautiful puppy soon! Good for you, and please give us more pictures. :-)
I am sure there are some legitimate reasons breeders are not testing, but I would rather have a dog tested after everything I have gone through experiencing degenerative myelopathy first hand with my late beloved corgi.

Alice, thank you for explaining... I couldn't have explained it any better. Romeo was tested and came up as a "carrier"
I am looking forward to lots of picture taking, lol
I am sorry.... I meant to thank Beth for explaining..... apologizes.......
I am testing for DM but it will be a few years before I reach my goal as I am not rushing into culling dogs. I do have a good start though, so far one of my males who is a carrier, has helped produce 2 DM clears with more tests pending. He is also an AKC CH. I have others who are carriers and a female puppy whose mom was clear and dad was carrier,,,,,,,,,,,,anxiously waiting for those results to get back to me.

Hello -

Where are you located? I'm looking for a breeder who tests for DM...(per another post I left on this thread). Thank you so much -

Emma

Hello -

Can you tell me how this puppy/corgi has worked out for you? I  live in Tennessee and I am searching for a breeder...I lost my Pembroke last May (May '10) due to degenerative myleopathy and while I am excited about getting another corgi, I am also terrified of having to go through the heartbreaking process of DM again.

I would LOVE to get in touch with this breeder but would also love to know how your puppy is getting on as I think this post is almost a year old.

Thank you -

Emma in TN

Congratulations! What a cute puppy!
OMG what a cutie.....enjoy.....
