Sorry to ask so many questions, but I have an appointment Wednesday to leave my 6 month Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Ella, overnight to be spayed. My vet had told me last time to make an appt. soon for the spaying. Now, as usual, I am getting nervous as I read online that some think 6 months is too early, and that the bone plates need to grow until 18 months before spaying. If I'm going to cancel, I'd better do it soon. What has been anyone's experience with this? Thanks so much.

If Ella was a boy I'd say go ahead and wait, but I personally would spay before her first heat. I believe it has been shown that keeping dogs intact longer may help to avoid some heath issues, but her risk of mammary cancer also goes way up after her first heat. My pem was neutered at 4 months (I didn't know any better at the time and I don't recommend doing it that early!) and he turned out fine. :)
Oh, thanks so much for this reassuring input. I guess I should go ahead with it, then. Thanks again.
I had my Gwen spayed at 6 months No problems. My Nimue had been in heat once (we got her when she was over a year old) Her previous owner stated it was the expense as to why he didn't even though I know for a fact he paid 700.00 for her from the breeder.
But anyway she was fine as well. But yes before they come into heat is better.
Keep the appt!! And I'm sure Ella will come thru with flying colours!!
Thank you so much, Kat. :)
It is easier to have it done before the 1st heat cycle and much less mess and having to be watching her. 6 months old should be fine.
Thanks, Jane. It's good to get input from others with experience with dogs and vets. :) Much appreciated.
All the female dogs I've had as puppies...none of them corgis...I've had spayed at 6 months. Katie was spayed at 4 because she was a breeder for Hersonway corgis. She only had 2 litters in those 4 years tho. She is 9 now and healthy. Unless you plan on breeding her I would keep the appointment.
Thank you, Linda.
At what age do they have their first heat? Can they get pregnant before that heat is evident to us humans?
I believe they can have their first heat at 6-8 months, but am not sure about pregnancy without the heat being obvious.
It's usually closer to 9 months...the 1st cycle may be shorter and lighter but they will bleed 1st then swell and then bleed again and in adult dogs this will be longer. You can't miss the swelling and that is when she will be willing to take on a partner...very willing. Sometimes this isn't the case with a pup but it's a new experience and depending where you live you might not want to have your dog outside left alone as if there is a willing male(neutered or not) it can happen. so no NOT before the first heat but during...which is not healthy for a young dog!
Hope this helps.
