So, I had Jack to the vet today to follow up on yet another scratched eye.  Silly Jack.

The good news is, the eye is fine.  The bad news is, he has a badly cracked molar that needs to be extracted.

I forgot to ask the vet a couple of questions and hope that my friends here at My Corgi can help.  Two things, mainly:

1)  Will he likely need a course of antibiotics after the removal, if indeed it is just that one molar?

2)  Will he be able to eat his normal kibble right away, or will he need soft food for awhile?  I hope not, because both dogs get icky poops from even very good quality soft dog food, so I'd probably feed him hamburger and rice if that were the case.

Thanks!

Beth -  our corgi Merlin had to have a canine extracted or more accurately major oral surgery about a year ago.  Yes, the vet did give him a round of antibiotics after the surgery and he was on rice with broth or soft food for a few days.  I do remember that (other than how much it cost) I was way more worried about how bad it would be for Merlin than it actually turned out to be. Hope this helps.

I don't believe that any of my dogs had an antibiotic for just one tooth but it also might depend if the tooth was starting to get infected.

Both Wynn and Teddy were on antibiotics but that was due to each having more than 10 teeth pulled. Even though with Wynn they thought is was just one but once he was under they found many more!

With food I just soaked it in warm water and made it mushy for a few days and then switched to soaking until soft.

Good Luck....Jack!

Max had to have a cracked molar removed.  No antibiotics but I did have to soften his dry food with warm water.  They advised that for a few days so the site would heal without him chomping on hard dry food.  He was fine, they gave me some pain meds but I only used them that night and the next morning...he didn't seem to be in pain.

I will say it was expensive because it was a molar.  They had to cut the tooth in half and then basically dig both sides of the tooth.

Thank you all.   I had to call the vet back about something and I asked about food.  They said he may need his regular food softened for a few days but should not need special food.

Monday is the big day.

Unfortunately his pre-surgery blood work showed one of his liver enzymes (ALT) elevated, so now he is also getting an ultrasound.   I am worried.

Beth....will keep lots of good thoughts and prayers that it's just a temporary upset and the ultrasound will be fine.

Please keep us posted.

Sending good thoughts and prayers for Jack!

Jack's extraction went fine and all of the other teeth were ok.   Antibiotics for 10 days. He has dissolvable stitches.   Just meloxicam for the pain;  I know from having it for Maddie that this is one of the only pain meds that is processed but he kidneys and not the liver, so I'm guessing that is the reason she chose this over Rimadyl or a mild narcotic.

He is still kind of groggy and he's also favoring the leg where he had the IV.   It looks perfectly clean.  No redness or swelling.  So I'm guessing it's just sore and there is no real problem there.

Liver ultrasound was normal, thank god.  He's on Denamarin for 30 days and then we redo the blood test.

How's Jack doing?

He's doing better, Jane.  That first day he was miserable and uncomfortable.  His front leg was sore from the IV and his back leg was sore probably from the positioning for the ultrasound.

Last night was the first time he really wanted to play since Monday.  My guess is his mouth was a little sore.   His legs, front and back, seem fine now.

His belly looks ridiculous.   lol    Don't tell him, though.  I don't think it will come back for awhile because he's going into a shed cycle soon.   Poor guy.

Beth.....glad to hear Jack is doing better, wanting to play is a good thing.  When Max had to have that huge growth removed from his side we had him clipped short...my poor fluffy looked so pitiful..but it made it easier all around for the surgery and then there wasn't too much difference in length when it started to grow back in.

I think you will need to feed a soft diet for a week or so.  I cooked a mixture of brown rice and quinoa and added chicken or hamburger to that, with some mashed carrot.  Alternately you can put the dog's kibble in a sealed container, add water to cover the amount and leave it out on the counter overnight.  It will soften enough to be eaten easily.  When you feed in the morning, refill the container for the evening meal.  I did this with one of my dogs that had to be on soft food for a month.
