Does anyone have the problem of constantly having to clean their dog's butt? I'm not talking diarrhea, but stools that are soft enough that on the way out catch on her hair. I have trimmed a little around her behind, but don't want to make her look like a baboon.

Holly is free of worms, so that is not the problem. Until recently she was fed a mixture of Wellness dry (water added) and a couple spoonfuls of Wellness canned beef dog food---all grain free. I have switched her to Nutri Source Grain Free and Hound Gatos 98% Beef. She also gets a couple of carrots a day. No matter what the food; I usually have to clean her up.

The vet said the problem is the Corgi's long back and her not having a tail that she can't really hump up. Any suggestions or is this common? I have also heard of giving some pumpkin puree. I'm wondering about totally going raw, but know the fat on beef bones will give her the runs. Maybe chicken?

Thanks for any help.

Oh goodness, this gave me a hearty belly laugh at 2:30 AM. The idea of a corgi-baboon was too much for me to handle! :D

As for loose stools, Ace has an issue with them when he gets fatty treats or foods the day before. He is on a fully raw diet, and when I don't give him things like a smoked pig ear (delicious, but so greasy), his stool is rock hard and dry even on the way out. His main protein is chicken, and the bones we give him are largely from poultry as well, since I avoid machine-cut pork and beef bones from my grocer. Perhaps you should try pumpkin first to see if it will bind her poos up a bit?

Thanks! Where are you at? I'm in Kansas and it is 8 pm here.

I'll try the pumpkin then all raw--chicken and not beef. Last resort she will have a bare bottom and I will use a high pressured hose to clean her. OK, just kidding!

France. :) But anyway, I would start with the least dramatic change. Is there a reason you include wet with her kibble, aside from flavour? She should be hydrated enough provided that there is a constant supply of fresh water.

Going raw is a huge commitment and definitely something I had to read up on very thoroughly before taking the leap.

Great meeting you and looks like you keep late or early hours? :-) The only reason I wet her kibble was I guess the idea that dry kibble sticks to their teeth and causes tartar. I will stop that and just continue with the can food, but maybe switch to chicken? She always has fresh water available.

Thanks.

Hi Margie, there's a lot of reasons for messy butt, not mixing the old bag of food with new bag is one. Dry kibbles should produce firm stool, unless the food is too rich. Wet food almost always guarantee a wet butt.

Corgi's long back can hump up.

Can pumpkin can give stool a better shape.

If you're going to go raw, consult a licensed professional in the FAQ.

Hi Sam, I have mixed the Wellness dry with the new food and there was plenty of the former so I should be safe there. She was the same even before switching, so not a case of new food causing it.

I have consulted the vet who is 100% for going raw with foods she stocks. I may go that way, but the pricing was high. The dry is far from cheap, but not as bad. The reason for wetting it was advice that I had received from the vet that it was better to wet it and let it soak up rather than feeding it as totally dry.

Haven't tried the pumkin--puree not the pie filling--before, but have seen it recommended a lot.

Hi Margie, if you're going to go raw, consult a licensed professional who is not a vet, vets only get 2 units of nutrition in school. Don't buy commercial raw food, purchase from your local butcher, it's much more cost effective.

Hi Sam,

I would agree about the vets and nutrition, but not my vet. She is totally into nutrition and does her research on the brands she carries. Unlike other vets that carry Science Diet, she does not. When she started carrying raw she did a lot of research. She preaches getting both dogs and cats off of grain based diets.

I'm not sure I'm too wild about our local butcher as I would even eat meat from him. I think the thing that worries me is getting salmonella. I had heard that dogs can handle it, but that is not true as some of the deaths as recalls have proven.

Hi Margie, there are a lot of things to think about when it comes to feeding raw. Source of quality meat, recalls, your own travel schedule and lifestyle...etc. Commercial raw also had recalls, check the FDA feed on your right.

If your vet doesn't carry Hills, she's either carries Hill's rx or Royal Canin rx. They are manufactured for specific purposes. Don't believe everything you read on the internet, look for court documents / public records.

Do your own nutrition research and go straight to the studies, not the summary version from media outlet or bias opinion from the internet. Read the FAQ on nutrition, find a licensed nutritionist, make your best decision within your budget. Food company change ingredients, management, plants all the time, don't follow trend and brand. Good luck!

Hi Sam,

She carries Wellness, Earthborn, Candiae, and I don't know the names of what brand she carries for Raw. I would agree about not believing everything you read, but when I read of companies that had good food, but have been bought out by the bigger companies and then their product gets recalled several times---I get concerned. I have no problem with buy outs as long as the ingredients are good and profit doesn't dictate cheaper ingredients that lack quality.

Thanks for all the help and I will research further and I will do comparisons.

I switched Izzy to a low fat food and no more messy butt

Thanks Bev. I have quit letting her having a beef bone with fat on it and that is really bad.
