Micro Chips with GPS through Your Wireless Carrier?
I was thinking the other day when a friend of mine lost her Labrador...he didn't have his tags on nor was he microchipped. But...I know many times my dogs will lose their tags and if someone really wanted that dog all they have to do is strip them of their tags. Even though microchipped the chip is only good if scanned and if the dog hasn't been located or someone is holding that dog there is noway of locating them. What a loss!! So I was brainstorming and looking at my Blackberry Storm with a GPS on it and my kids phones where I can view where they are at, how fast they are traveling and even set it up to time alerts for locations so if they leave school early I get a text or if they go out of that location I get a text. Pretty convenient and prompt! Why not, and I don't even know if it exists, have that for our micro chips that we implant in our dogs necks and you pay for the service through your wireless carrier. This way if your dog leaves the yard your texted for an immediate response and recovery. If your dog is stolen you can locate them and turn into the proper authorities. Seems like a simple solution and a big help in locating your missing pet. Am I crazy thinking this way and does something like this even exist?

Im not sure if it exists or not. I think the only problem is size at the moment. If you need a gps tracker it probably needs a battery and some more wiring then the scan code. Causing the little rice sized item to be larger and that needle is pretty big already lol
I believe the normal chips work by just having a code they scan. Instead of a regular code its more bumps that are scanned. Thus why it has to be close under the skin. Then the information is updated under a number that's in a giant server that doctors can log into by that one scan.
I wish they had this - Im sure there's technology for it its just not cost effective yet.

FYI I have seen the radio transmitters that they put on sparrows for tracking. Short range and battery life, but they are SMALL.

The problem with that is that the microchip would require a battery in order to stay on. Sadly, you can't locate your kids phones if they have no power. Unless you could somehow find a way to plug your pup in every night for a recharge this just isn't possible. They do make collars with GPS tracking but they require batteries and like you mentioned if someone wants your dog they could just take the collar off.

I would love to be able to track GPS, but it sounds like there are technology limitations for now. With the speed things progress, it will probably be possible in a few years.

I recently had a conversation with someone who had a grandson with autism I believe and this child had/wore a bracelet or something like that and there was some type of a monitor that alerted the parent if the child left the area. My 1st thought was that would be great for a dog other that they'd again have to be wearing something. I don't know if there's something like this but it sure would be great for many reasons, especially if we could just use a microchip!

It is not worth it in my opinion, a neighbor has one for each of her Rhodesian Ridgebacks, they have escaped and were unable to find them through the GPS system (it was charged). Luckily, they both decided to go back home after six days, the second time, it still failed them and again by luck, they returned within 10 days
