Hey guys!  I have a 14-week-old corgi.  I've been feeding him Nutrisource puppy food for small and medium breeds, as recommended by his breeder.  Then I hopped on here and read that he should be on large breed kibble.  I bought an 18lbs bag a couple weeks ago .. I've been mixing it with Freshpet Vital complete meals (which is for all life stages) because he started getting picky about just dry kibble.  (Ratio is about 1:2, with more kibble)  Would it be safe to keep feeding him the mix or should I just get rid of the kibble bag and get him large breed puppy food right away?

Ended up going with Nutrisource Pure Vita ALS .. Salmon, as per Ludi's suggestion :) And yes, Jane, from Pet Expo!  Zeke has not been in there yet .. he has been into Petco a couple of times, and attracted lots of attention ..

Might switch foods again eventually .. was considering TOTW or Wellness, but they didn't have any ALS .. No Acana either that I could see .. Orijen sounded tasty, but now it sounds like it's too high protein for puppies?  I get the large breed vs small breed, but the adult food vs puppy food is a little confusing .. and I'm a little worried about ending up with a dwarfed corgi @_@ My parents had a Labrador who wouldn't finish her meals as a puppy, and she ended up being corgi size .. no exaggeration.

I believe TotW is entirely an ALS range, I could be wrong though. I've never heard of a TotW puppy food, but it never hurts to ask. :-) Acana has puppy food, but its grain-free range is ALS (I'm looking at a bag of it right now). Best of luck!

TOTW is not ALS but I think they used to be.  The store here that sells it doesn't have the puppy but I found it online.

Ahh, ok! It has been a while since I fed TotW to my two. :)

When I got Gidget, I was feeding Shippo Orijen so that's what she started on.  I compared the Adult to the Large Breed and they were so similar that I just fed her the Adult.  She only gained about a pound a week which seems to be the norm so she didn't grow too fast.  I'm more worried about my newer puppy Sheldon because I took them off grain free due to Gidget and Shippo pooping excessively and he seems kind of small for his age.  I am currently looking into reasons why grain free didn't work so I might be putting them back on it if I can figure out if maybe I did something wrong.  Orijen is a good food if you can afford it.  With three dogs I'm not so sure I can go back to it.

Has Zeke made it to Pet Expo yet?????  Also if you ever decide to try TOTW (salmon has lower protein) some farm supply store carry this:) It's usually cheaper there too!

I want to thank you so much for starting this thread. I have not brought my puppy home yet but I feel a lot more informed about a corgi diet needs now. I am trying to learn all I can so she is happy and healthy.

It's important to keep in mind that what works for one dog may not necessarily work for the other! I've heard about dogs on here thriving on TotW, for instance, but my two weren't terribly pleased with the stuff. The best way to gauge a food is not just its ingredients list, but your dog's coat, smell, teeth, activity level, and stool quality. And of course, his desire to eat it!

What do you guys think about whole food (eg. Freshpet Vital) vs. dry kibble?

I prefer kibble over anything soft. Kibble helps with teeth. Also, I feel that they are more complete. Soft foods can be done on top or in addition to kibble, but not as a whole diet. For instance, I do Orijen/Acana and a few tablespoons of Evanger's Grain Free wet mixed in for breakfast. Then for dinner we do some yogurt mixed in. But the staple of her diet is hard kibble to help maintain her teeth.

Thanks, Andrea :)

I feed both of mine Nutrisouce and have for most of the time, they are6 and 5 . They have done great on it! I've not seen any recalls on it. Their coats are beautiful, full of energy, and they love it. We are using the grain free seafood kind now. I like the lower fat and lower protein.
