I was curious as to how folks secure their beloved Corgis in their cars when they travel. Since she was about 12 lbs. Lucy has ridden in a booster seat that allows her to see out the window; she is hooked up to it. But this has only been for quick trips. She has not been in the car for more than 15 minutes at a time. As I am thinking of taking her up to Maine this summer for a little get away, I have been trying to look for easy, comfortable, and safe modes of travel. The harnesses I've seen at the pet store seem ok, but I didn't know if anyone had a better suggestion. She is now 22.5 lbs (1 year old).

I suppose I should add that I have a Honda CRV. Thank you!

I had to drive about 2hrs when I first picked Kaylee up from the breeder and we've driven her around town quite a bit. We got her a (~$50) Petmate plastic travel crate that fits in the back seat of my car, a 2009 Honda Civic. For long trips I run a rope through the tie-down holes and the baby seat hooks, just to keep the crate secure in case of any abrupt speed changes.

Hope that helps!

I used a seat belt for my last dog, but Becca prefers to ride in a crate.  I need to get on a little bigger than what I have now and that will still fit. It hasn't been easy. The crate has come in handy to confine her if needed one we reach our destination. If you decide on a harness try them on her at the store if possible. Kramer's old harness doesn't fit Becca quite right. It adjusts small enough on the straps but the proportions are not right.

I also thought od a harness, but what happens if the sir bag deploys?

Mine are always in the back seat, just like kids. The air bag could kill them so they stay in the back.

All my dogs get crated...they go on their crate automatically:) They can stretch out and I don't have to worry. I actually leave their leashes on for safety too.

Since all three of you have mentioned the crate, I can try that again. When Lucy was younger, she hated traveling in the crate; she'd whine and always pee in it no matter how short the car ride--that's why I got her the booster seat where she behaves and is quite the joy to be in the car with. She loves having the windows. I just don't think it's safe for her and I'm feeling increasingly guilty.

The crate she came with when I got her is one of those big plastic ones--the one she peed in. I think I'd have to get a larger one though, as that one  would not allow much room for movement. Out of curiosity, do your crates go in the back seat, or the back part of the car, if you have that kind of car (my honda does)?

Thank you for your input!

I have a PT Cruiser and Becca's crate goes in the back. I fold down one of the seats so she can still see me. I tried the crate in the backseat and it wasn't as stable. It wobbled some. (I like the tie down idea above) My current challenge is finding a longer crate that can still fit the width of the back area. I have been watching craigslist for weeks and think I'll have to break down and buy a brand new one. Petco has a 600 size that will fit.

One of my friends has a Subaru and just has a wire gate between the back and the back seat. The area is the same size as a crate for her golden.

Mine go in the back seat I belt the crate in and can see them. It may take some time since she is able to be out right now but maybe put her blanket and a favorite toy in and a couple little treats:)  Good luck!

Thanks Marcie and Jane. Online I saw great 3-door wire crate with strong, sturdy moldings made by Jeep. Unfortunately, their website says no longer in production so I'll have to keep an eye for similar ones unless a good used one pops up somewhere.

Check Amazon. Sometimes they still have stuff that is no longer in production.

I got a travel crate and I tie it down in many mode of transport.  For short trips though he is pretty good in someone's lap.

I don't use a crate because Chase doesn't like it as much. He actually has a seatbelt, a car seat and a child's booster seat and depending on how long the trip is, we choose from those. He prefers the seat belt because he likes to be nosey and look out the window, then when he gets bored he can just lay down. I used to use a regular harness but I bought car ride harness and it is much better. It is padded, extra in the front and the D ring for the seatbelt is in the back of the harness instead of across the shoulders. This is much more comfortable for him and it's better for his back. Plus he has more of a range of motion.
I ordered the seat belt and the harness online from ebay. If you are interested just make sure it is not coming from out of the country because that can mean more money.
Doggie car seats are also a great option, I love them. They come with a seat belt in them so not only do the dogs have their own personal space and a boost to safely look out the window, but they also are secured into the car seat.
Crates are also a good option, especially if your dog isn't a great car rider. Chase on the other hand would be a total pest the entire time he's in the crate.
He is only ever in his crate for bedtime and when I leave the house. He is not yet a year old so he does not have the luxury of staying out while I'm away from the house.
Good Luck!
We are moving to FL this weekend so we also have a long car trip ahead of us.
