It seems that Milkbone puppy treats upset his stomach causing loose stools, but he his going consistently. Should I just break up the treats even more and give just a little at a time until he adjusts or what?

Thanks ahead of time

Milkbone is one of those brands that has a big name, but is not high quality, so simply the quality of ingredients could be upsetting his stomach. I really like the Blue Buffalo Apple and Yogurt bars and the Natural Balance Turkey, Oatmeal and Cranberry treats. And no matter what I used, with a very young puppy, I would go ahead and be breaking them up as he gets used to them. Good luck with that sweet puppy!!
unfortunately, I have to drive over an hour just to get to a pet store that has decent feed and treats, I am doomed to use these until I need to go out of town again. Such is the curse of a small country town
Are you near a feed store? I actually have found that I often prefer feed stores to the pet stores. Both the prices and the brand selection seems to be much better than the large pet chains. Just a thought, I know feed and seeds can be easier to find in rural areas (I live in Oklahoma, so I understand that problem!). Flint River Ranch has some good food/treats too, and I find I pay about the same for them as the store bought food, the shipping is free, and it comes right to my door. This site has some more information (http://www.desertwillowholisticpets.com/).
It took Paisley a really long time for her tummy to get used to treats too. She is just now at 7 months, getting used to them. I would either break them up even smaller and give less in a day or try a different treat. I really liked the Old Mother Hubbard puppy treats. You can get them at PetSmart or Petco. They seem really bland but are higher quality than Milkbone. Also, for awhile we just used pieces of her food as a treat because I was just getting tired of her getting loose stools every time she got a treat.
If you are just looking for a reward treat, when Bindi was a baby I used the bottom of a plastic egg carton and used to freeze a mixture of 1/2 beef broth and half water into tiny little ice cubes. Occasionally when there were leftovers I'd throw them into the juice.. a green bean, carrot slice, or corn, or piece of chicken skin. Somehow, it taught her to love ice and today, even though they're just water - ice cubes are still one of her favorite treats.
Perhaps simply reducing the size of the treats will help. Treats can be very tiny, match-head sized, for training. Tiny meat scraps, bacon bits; make sure they're fresh and don't go bad. Apple bits. We often use just kibble for (oversized) treats.
Small dogproof, airtight, pocket-sized, screw-cap containers are handy. If you just keep them in plastic baggies in your pocket, sooner or later the dog will get ahold of your pants and chew through them.
I'm with John - I switched to Flint River Dog Food a few months ago and my dogs like it so much, I just use single, small pieces as treats. When we're doing special recall training I use some fish treats I found, but besides that it's all kibble around here.
Nibbler loves pieces of apple as well. Pupperoni actually isn't horrible, it does have beef as the first ingredient. We also like Nature's Recipe treats, which are at petsmart.
Did you make some homemade treats? They might be better and not so upsetting! Plus break them into tiny bits for any treat...if you check the ingredients of homemade vs bought...you will see a big difference! You cold also fry up a chicken breast(a kitchen scissors works well to cut these), cut into pea size bites and freeze these...they will defrost fast...not for all the time though! I also pick up dog food samples and use for treat but you might want to wait till he gets a little bigger but start picking up now! I had the same problem with having to drive 60 miles 1 way to get my dog food but I went online and checked under locations/dealers sold and found a hardware store that sells good food and it's only 25 miles...much easier! This would be my suggestion! Oh yes...pieces of apples as Mary suggested, 1/2 cooked carrots and broccoli are wonderful treats for Wynstan and this also gets him in the habit of enjoying "good, healthy treats" my dogs love broccoli cooked and raw!

Good Luck!
For younger puppies like your boy, I recommend and also use my self is cheese. It makes a great treat and is easier on their stomach because it contains healthy good bacteria cultures that come closer to soothing the tummy than upsetting it. Pat Hastings the puppy wonder woman also recommends it. I use string cheese a lot since it is easy to handle and doesn't really melt, it just drie's up so if you leave some in your pocket after a training session, it doesn't leave a gooey mess. It also comes in little individual stick packs that you can take with you easily.

The cheese is easier on their tummies but they also enjoy it.
Yes as Wind Dial stated... a favorite for all my dogs is little bites of cheese! They hear the zip lock bag if I'm in the fridge and come running for a treat! I would still start with the veggies/fruit also so that he gets used to this as it's a healthy treat!
