I tried looking up IVDD in previous discussions, but all the search brings up is specific comments. It would be super cool if the search brought up thread titles instead.

That said, they suspect Waffle has IVDD.  The X-ray they took was inconclusive (as they often are) but they don't want to do any more X-rays/tests until next week when he does not have a GI upset.  My concern is that maybe he DOESN'T have GI upset, and he just has first stage IVDD mimicking GI upset. :[  Of course, I'm BEGGING that Waffle doesn't have it at all.

They did a full set of neurologic tests (yay for being at one of 28 vet schools in the country) and his neurologic functions are all good.  The only thing that tipped them off to IVDD is his breed, pain when you press on his thoracolumbar vertebra (the vertebrae that connects his rib cage vertebrae to his lumbar vertebrae) and his reluctance to move.  The thoracolumbar vertebrae is the one most often impacted by IVDD.  Great.

They didn't tell me this yesterday, but I called them today and she said I should be keeping him in strict confinement.  No movement except a 10 min walk on a short leash every day and potty breaks.  She says the movement prevents him from becoming stiffer, otherwise no extra movement at all.

I joined the yahoo group, Orthodogs, and am slowly gathering info on IVDD.  I want to know if any of you have had experiences with IVDD, and if so, how are your dogs doing now?  I don't want a crippled dog for the next 15 years.  He's so young. He's not even 2.  :[

No personal experience with IVDD, but my thoughts are with you and Waffle today.  I'm hoping along with you that it's just a GI upset or something equally minor.  Here's hoping for the best.  :)

Here here!

Here's one thread I found on this site...

That  being shared, you and Waffle are in my prayers - I can't imagine the emotions you must be having, but try your best to stay positive!  Remember that they can sense our emotions, and we will all be sending you good "mojo" from here :)

Thanks for the link.  It brightened my mood a bit to see those dogs being normal again. :)

Oh, poor Waffle!   I hope they are wrong.  Perhaps he just has a sore spot from the GI upset; if he was straining or heaving he might have pulled something.

I will keep sending good thoughts your way.  I would also talk to or e-mail his breeder;  I know you had a good relationship, and she can tell you what her experiences are and if it's common in his pedigree.

Wishing you the best.

From what I know, I don't think any of her dogs have had IVDD.  I sent her an email and I'm going to call her when I calm down, though.  I talked to her last night about the hip dysplasia they may have found, which probably overshadowed the IVDD.  (She was very adamant that he probably does not have hip dysplasia!)  So, yeah.
Hope everthing will be ok. Being his stool and the vomiting is off sounds more like intestinal. For now i would not give him anything raw. Let his stomach settle down. Kibble ,oatmeal or rice is would be good for now. Hope Waffle feels better soon. Its sad to see our loved ones not feeling well. Hang in there..
He's getting boiled chicken, boiled eggs, with a bit of cottage cheese as per instructions from my vet.  IVDD can cause loss of bowel control, and seeing that his runny poop is almost falling out of his butt, it's a bit of a concern for me. :[  But, he's on antibiotics and an antacid.  His fever has gone down to 101.8, almost normal, so something is going on in there for sure.
Hi Rachael, I understand you must be very worried, may be it's better to check off one thing at a time. IVDD is another ball game, join the Yahoo Wheel Corgi Group, they have a much better support system there. Good luck and I hope Waffle's GI problem have a speedy recovery.
If it is any consolation for you, I know that waffle is in very good hands (yours) as I know you waited a long time for waffle to be your baby. I know you can give him the love and care he may need.

Glad to hear his fever is going down. Good sign. It almost sounds like he has a severe bacterial infection. My corgi had that, it was coccidiosis. He was on a farm and he picked it up from the chickens. He had more of the running stool and fever. He got better with the antibiotics, took like a week. I wouldn't worry about IVDD right now, you dont' get fever's with that. Hope Waffle feels better in a few days , rest and your love and caring that you give is what he needs. Were all thinkin of you two.

I was thinking it sounds like a GI infection too.  I know humans regularly get lower back pain with certain GI infections.  I realize dog anatomy is much different, but I suppose it could still be a factor.
