Wynn went back for his test today and his bladder stone is gone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Still has to have special food forever but that's OK. Wynn (AKA Mr. Chubo) has lost 5 pounds!!!!

Wynn had to go to the vet for blood in his urine. Looking online  made things very scary for what it might be BUT it ended up being a single large(nickel size) bladder stone. He now has a special canned food for a month to see if it will dissolve and if not he will need surgery. Vet didn't seem overly concerned and said surgery is not much worse than him being spayed...

Anyone have any experience with this?

I sure hope that the special food and vacation help the sweet boy!

I have had experience with this problem in cats and know one client who deals with it with her border collie.  The BC is on constant medication/diet and it seems to keep her in check.  The cat had to have surgery to remove the stones, was put on a special diet and lived another eight years without a repeat of the stones.

I am hoping the food does dissolve it but also the vet is very positive that if he needs surgery it should also be fine. I don't like the idea of special food from now on BUT if it works...that is good. Thanks!

No experience. ....just hope treatment goes well.

Rocky has had crystals in his urine enough that he has had blood in his urine. He was on a prescription dry food and it worked. The crystals dissolved and he's been fine. I give him a cranberry pill daily. Not sure if it really helps but I feel better doing something!

Is the cranberry pill a dog or person pill? I just called the vet to ask about this but he hasn't gotten back to me yet.

So Rocky was dry food? I am wondering if Wynn is on the wet due to the size stone. He will need the dry food after the stone is dissolved. Does Rocky like the food????

The cranberry pill is a people pill. I get it over the counter at any big box store. I toss it into his food and he chomps it down. Cranberry is supposed to help with people urinary tract problems. The vet said it is fine to give him. Rocky was on Royal Canin urinary dry food. He loved it. It also seemed to help with tooth tartar which is a little weird but maybe not since its job is to dissolve mineral deposits. I don't have him on it now and he is fine. Talk to your vet before you take him off the prescription food. The vet checked him several times after to be sure nothing new was developing. If Rocky has problems, we will put him back on the food but it has been several years with no issues.

Thanks Karen, Wynn is on canned food for a month to dissolve his stone and then the vet will check if it is gone. Then switch him to a dry food if all is well. We talked a bit today because I told him I don't care for Science Diet, he will also check into other foods that might be OK to feed him. I will ask him about the Royal Canin but will have to drive about 60 miles to go get some as we don't have any big pet stores around here. Glad to hear Rocky is doing well!!!!!

Jane, you can get almost anything from Amazon.com.  Lately, I have been getting my dog feed from them.  since I have Prime, it is here in 2 days and is cheaper than most Pet Stores.

Usually those foods for specific vet issues like bladder problems can only be purchased through a vet. I couldn't get Rocky's food anywhere but from a vet. I don't like Science Diet either. Rocky did very well on the Royal Canin, beautiful coat, good poops, happy smile. Your vet should be able to get it from his supplier.

Haven't been thru it with any dogs but Oliver, the cat, had such bad crystals in his urine that he had a chronic blockage.  Solution was to re-route his plumbing and he now pees like a girl...that was 2 years ago.  Not that that's any help for you.

Sure hope it works for him and he doesn't need surgery.

I had a cat like that years ago but the food worked. We did have to have him "put to sleep" at the young age of 11-12 due to kidney failure and I believe it was due to his original problem.
