Yogurt for yeast infection in Corgi ears? 3/13/11 Should I add Acidophilus capsules to their regular diet?
I have been battling with some of my dogs and yeast infections these last 2 weeks. Wiley my rescue is on prednisoine and antibiotics so I am giving her yogurt. My others I just started drops in their ears 2 times a day for 21 days (that's a lot of cleaning and 16 drops per dog per day:( )...some have been shaking their heads and others not. I also had them checked for mites a few weeks ago and they found none but we did treat for this now as I feel the situation has gotten worse.
My question is...will the yogurt possibly help? I know the antibiotics kill the good bacteria as well and that's why Wiley is getting it but does anyone have experience with giving it for yeats infections just to help with the good bacteria? I am giving about a TBSP every morning and I know it won't hurt. Yes, it's fat free plain yogurt.

3/13/2011...I order supplements from Puritan's Pride and they have several probiotic acidophilus products and some also contain pectin. Does anyone use these and/or know if they would be good for regular use with my corgis????? They also state that they have 3 billion live cells at the time of manufacturing...so how many survive the manufacturing????

o wow im sorry thats happening:( my parents dog gets yeast infections all the time but thats because hes on terrible food so i dont think its that but since yogurt has good bacteria it could help

Mine get grain free taste of the Wild so that should be ok. Wiley has suffered with yeast all her life(since we rescued her) but hopefully with the longer treatment things will get better! I have 2 shaking their heads and holding their ears funny but just want to treat them all so they can't tranfer this if it can be transferred. I actually have to mark all this on a calender as my dogs go running when I get the ear cleaner or the box of drops out.

When Jackson and Seanna had their yeast infections, I got the Zymox ear cleaner, and it worked great. It didn't burn like the prescription stuff the vet gave us, and I feel cleared it up alot faster. I also gave yogurt by mouth...took them about a week, but then they were healed, and I haven't had a problem since!

Jane what brand of yogurt are you using? Lots of the yogurt don't have much of the live bacteria that they need. I get a childrens powered acidophils from the health food store. It works good on Sally who has issues with dariy!
My holistic vet recommended it!

I was wondering if even the yogurt had different amounts of the live cultures in it...anyone know???? I normally buy a good organic brand but I wasn't at that store when I got this:( I will check out the powdered acidophils though...I am hoping they have it at our natural food section where I normally shop!

I just sprinkle on their food and add a little water (it doesn't have a smell and they don't act like it tastes any different). Look in the refrigerated area at the health food store. You have to keep it in the frig.

I actually ordered the Zymox online from a certified pet store. Can't remember the name, but I can look it up if you like! The dogs didn't mind it, as opposed to the vet one. The vet said the ear drops he prescribed burned. The zymox is more of a natural treatment also, as opposed to an antibiotic. Once I started using that, the infection cleared right up--and that was after two weeks of the vet prescribed drops.

When we or animals have to take systemic antibiotics, it is always good to provide the body with
a source of friendly bacteria. There are a variety of brands/names. Look for one that has several
types of bacteria to better imitate normal gut contents. I don't think eae infections are normally
transmissible. For the rescue that got it originally, you will probably have to clean her ears
frequently for quite a while to make sure, it has all been eradicated. It is really hard to get it
killed all the way down in there. (I have had floppy eared dogs with ear infections, not a Corgi.)

Thanks Lois. I am actually washing all of their ears daily. I am making them all paranoid as eveytime I come out with the ear wash bottle or the box with the ear med in they try to find a place to hide...poor babies:(
