Brenda,
I, too, was awakened this morning by major thunderstorm trauma. Lilliput, my corgi, panics terribly at this as well as fireworks. My rescue idiot dog, a former outdoor dog learning the indoor ropes, apparently follows blindly in any crazy behavior of Lilli's.

This morning was the first storm of the season, and in the morning, so I wasn't prepared. But Lilli is very well bred, was raised in my home so I would know if there had been any trauma, and is still out-of-her-mind terrified of thunder. After trying behavioral tricks, I finally resorted last year to drugging her during storms. If she's asleep or pleasantly occupied when the storm hits, she may just sleep thru it.

The problem with the drug (from vet) is that it has to be given an hour before the storm. That leaves me watching weather radar maps on the computer for hours trying to decide if a storm will really hit us, and trying to make the call an hour before it does. I think I get it right half the time. The other half I end up sedating her for no reason and I feel like a real jerk.
The other problem, which I'm not sure about, is that I've been told the dog still feels all the terror, just can't express it. Which is kind of half a loaf: if she has to be scared, at least she's not making herself crazier by her behavior, I guess.

(Fireworks - yuck! last year local fireworks were on Friday, neighbors set off fireworks on Sat the 4th, and Rhythm and Booms was Sunday. And neighbors will set them off anytime, so poor Lilli was a mess.)

Anyway, I don't think you need to worry too much about finding the breeder. Lilliput's background is well-known, but that didn't help in dealing with her problem.

As for the behaviorist: one of my neighbors called Dog's Best Friend, Patricia McConnell's company. This was a few years ago, but I believe she spent about $100 for 2 hours home consult She said it helped a LOT with her issues. And when I think of how many times I have spent at least that much on other things for the dogs, and the potential benefit of creating a peaceful home, and the dog you want, and maybe even saving your puppy's life, it doesn't seem like an unreasonable investment.

Any more questions, please ask.

Vicky Hyde,

So glad you liked my pic. Thanks.

As for believing furry creatures that crawl out of their holes... you may recall that our Sun Prairie groundhog did NOT crawl out - there was severe winter weather going on, judged by the humans to be unsafe for man or beast. So they used a stuffed ground hog.

NOW who do you believe?

I haven't heard of them either. There is still thunder going on from the storm that I hear, but Guinness just brushes it off. He really doesn't notice! I hope you can track them down!

Yes tried everything give up hope on finding out more, just got some health issues we are dealing with but that we are getting under control..Just got some very serious behavior issues too and am at my wits end have tried everything to help his heavy anxiety and fears of things-- he is terrified of everything-- today the bad storms and he was having severe panic attacks-- I did everything to calm him and nothing worked except letting him lay next to me.. I would like to see a trainer or a behaviorist for him but just donot got the extra funds to do that so doing everything I can think of to help him- he is the sweetest boy and he gets along well with Toby.. He has been tossed from home to home in the last year and I have had him since December- and we want to keep him just need help with some of his behavior issues..Thank you...
