30 year old photo - Rookie, w. baby Lindsay

Rookie loved Lindsay and was always there protecting her. I can't imagine ever worrying about how Rookie would react to the birth of Lindsay, our first baby. I also can't imagine keeping them apart. Prior to our babies, Rookie was always with me. No matter how late I'd be up working, he'd be right there with his regal head on my foot. He was incensed when we came home with a new Corgi, Maggie. Maggie was 14 wks. and Rookie was 6 mo. He tried every which way to keep from entering a room. When she persevered, he pushed her into our pool. Eventually they became inseparable best friends. But, Maggie never was devoted to the babies like Rookie. Maybe Rookie just kept them to himself.

How do I ever get over losing my best friend? I had to make the awful decision to send her over The Bridge on Oct 10 2011. Still to this day I cry over losing her. I do have a new puppy coming Feb…Continue

@Bev - Thank you! I thought so, but what do I know? I named my first rescue, Lucky. So much for creativity. I think I was about 9...however my creativity has not improved one bit!

That's it for today. Way hard but worth it! Next up: Rookie and Emily.

Annie on the left (with her brother, Remington) the day we brought her home to live with us. Jack, Annie & I couldn't have been happier. These memories are hard. I find myself typing the wrong Corgi name, like my mother who would often call me Kenny (my brother) but more often, Lucky (our dog).

*ANNIE* our 2nd wonderful Corgi and our first CA Corgi (bred by Judy Hart of Sua Mah and a Kan-D Kid "Stoney" dgt)

Jack and I got married in 1973 and w/in a year moved from NY to CA. It was very hard on my mom to have us move 3000 miles away, so I couldn't uproot Gorki from his home with her & take him to CA. Jack and I missed Gork terribly and we went to the PWCCA So. CA Specialty Show (1974) to see if there would be a Corgi for us.

That's where we met Annie. She was a beauty and the among the sweetest Corgis I've ever known or owned. Her owner's loss (Annie didn't win a point that day-YAY!) was our gain. The city code where Annie lived restricted the number of dogs per house and Annie's owner could not afford to keep her any longer. She called and asked if Jack and I wanted to give Annie a home. We jumped at the chance! Annie was a snuggle bunny from day one. She loved nothing more than jumping in the car and going with me on all my errands and then flopping on top of Jack or me when we got home. We called her Annie Fannie because when she was happy (which was all the time) her bunny butt would wiggle a hundred miles an hour. We later flew Gork to CA to breed with Annie. We wanted them both to live on forever in their puppies. It probably wasn't a well-thought-out breeding, but we had nothing to worry about. Annie thought Gork was a pest of the highest order and had no use for him. But,

It was fun having them together for a while. Sadly, Annie died in an accident when she was way too young. It broke our hearts. After losing Annie we never owned just one Corgi again until Lucy.

This is my first Corgi, Gorki

(DOB 1968)––He became our rescue dog at 1-yr old, as the result of a "gift" gone wrong. A "well-meaning" son purchased him as a companion for his elderly mother. It was wrong from the start. Grandma had no experience training a puppy, nor one as smart as a Corgi. She began her "training" with a broom and he quickly learned to snarl and then snap. In time, he escaped at every opportunity and the pound kept picking him up. Within months the family took more and more days to claim him.
My mom was on a list for a rescue Corgi and we were thrilled when we got the call that they had a year-old Corgi (b. 1968). I always planned to name my first Corgi, Gorki, because I thought Corgis were a bit gawky. I would not have changed his name, but his call name was Corky, so the switch of names was seamless.

He was at the top of the smart list, but had temperament issues either from a hard first year, genetics––or maybe a bit of both. He was an English import with a strong Stormerbanks line (including Sabreflash, Super Sabre, Invader, and Sabre's Model.

I loved Gorki. He was smarter than most people. I esp. loved that he never let my mom enter my room. He guarded the steps and when my mom tried to take the last step, he would bark and not allow her on the landing. He also had a long memory and held grudges. My boyfriend at the time must have done some misdeed to the Gork when I wasn't around, so whenever he picked up Gorki's lead (something that would ordinarily make the Gork go ga-ga), Gorki would leave the room. Gorki taught himself to bring the leash when he wanted to go out, open cabinets when he wanted to eat, knock the receiver off the hook when the phone rang, and on and on.

Ricco looks like such a sweetheart in that picture with his cute little bandana! I have a basket of them by our door to throw on Ed and Gem when we stroll the neighborhood!!! Oh and Phinny wore them too!!!

I had never heard the term "Heart Dog" before. Ricco was definitely my Heart Dog! Thank you for posting this.
