My Izzy (sable) was pushing 39lbs at one point, we finally figured out she was getting her food and her brothers food most of the time. We cut her intake to 3/4 cup weight management food in the morning and at night and strictly monitoring the feedings. We had her down to 34lbs, walking her and was going in the right direction. Then she blew her ACL and I feel like we are starting all over again. Not as much excercise, only what she can handle without over doing it, But we failed to cut her food back due to the lack of walking. We are ready to start the battle of buldge again. Rocky her brother teeters between 27-29lbs. Probably has gained a pound or two since he is getting all his own food now!
My 1st corgi was up to 52 lbs of love , she was on food that I had to purchase from the vet.She didn't lose an ounce.......I followed the directions perfectly..............well she became sick and I decided to change her vet................she passed from Heart Failure due to her weight. Now my new girl gets 1/2 c in th a.m and 1/4c in the p.m. Treats are givin maybe 3x a week she weights 27 lbs................still larger than most but also not as active. I don't fall for her sad feed me eyes...............if I did we'd have a house full of fattys........P.S. a trainer I used suggested replacing food with string beans or for every 1/4c of food give 1/4c CHERRIO'S MULTI-GRAIN.

Thanks! He is now 43# Our vet says 35 is the most he should weigh, so we have some work to do, i also wonder about his thyroid, but...
Hi, Carol! have you tried Royal Kanin weight management food (kibble). My dogs lost weight on it and they never seem hungry. It's Rx only so you have to get it from the vet. Good luck!

Well, Sonny is NOT losing weight - he is gaining! He appears to be starving on his new regieme, he is now eating the "stubble" from the thistle seed from the thistle feeder, he has eaten so much that his poop practically explodes from the seed. Last week he was lethargic all week, I think from too much bird seed remains.
I don't know about Goldens, I'll ask my niece next time I see her as she has 2, but 6 cups sounds like a lot! Does the dog appear large? Can you see or feel ribs?
Sonny has been on Lite food for a month now - NO weight loss, He is right at his dish every time he comes in and out of the houre, at feeding time (I swear he can tell time), he is eating the squash and arugula and weeds if anyone pulls them - I swear he has an eating disorder!
So, this is not about corgis. I was at friend's house today and she brought in her 10 month-old Golden to say "Hi". While she was giving him water I said that I was surprised that she gave him water in the smaller of his two bowls. She said it was because his food didn't FIT in the smaller one! No kidding? She says she feeds him 3 cups of food, twice a day! I said that didn't sound right and she said it is what the dog food bag says to feed him. Oh, and backed it up by saying he's not fat. 6 CUPS! I am very dubious on this one. Anyone?
I have a friend who always has 5 corgis, and they're all slim and trim. She came over one day and looked at my Merry, who at the time weighed in at a hefty 39 pounds and had intermittent problems with a limp, and said, "I see you don't know about the corgi diet". She told me to give her no more dry food daily than I could easily hold in the palm of my hand. Merry thought she was starving to death and told us so, but over the course of about a year we got her down to 25 pounds (10 pounds of which I swore was fur!). Her limping went away completely, and she stayed healthy and active until 14. After she lost the weight I went up a bit on her feeds, and we did have occasional backsliding, like when she was helping our other elderly dog finish her dinner when I wasn't looking. But, for the most part, she stayed a slim and trim girl, and I think it contributed to her long, active life.
Thank you for this group. One of my Pems is quite large and was 52 lbs at his highest. He DOES have hypothyroidism, diagnosed at a very young age. Our vet, however, was little assistance to us. I switched vets and so far DiMaggio has lost 5 lbs. He has a way to go, but we're hopeful.
Yeah, he helps! He ate the arugula out of the planter on the porch, I guess it was just corgi height. He also has been known to take the weeds out of the piles and eat them - maybe this new "lite" food is starving him. He looks up at me with those big corgi eyes lined in black that say FEED ME, FEED ME
