Ok, I must admit I may be too picky. Lucy smells too doggie. Is this a corgi thing or just that is the way it is with dogs?

I know I am not supposed to give her too many baths, but after 3 days she is starting to really smell again. Not the sweet little puppy smell, sadly that is gone. This is just a dog smell. A lady I talked with today has two aussies and could not remember the last time she gave them a bath. She does clean their feet though when they are muddy.

I started using Buddy Bath since I saw great reviews on the length of time their pooches smelled good. It is lovely and I think really not drying on her skin. Lucy hits 4 days and it is time to refresh her a bit.

Ok, fess up...do you give your pups a bath pretty frequently or am I just a clean freak??? Does Lucy need some of that nice smelling spray I see that will hold her over until bathtime? aka doggie deodorant!!!

Aren't dogs supposed to smell. Wyatt has dog breath and his feet smell like corn chips. I love it. It is what makes him so cute and proud to be a dog. I bet Lucy smells fine. I miss Wyatt right now, I wish I were home.

I give my two pups a bath once a week. I'm a very clean person and I like to take of the things that I value the most (aka the dogs and my car). I use a shampoo called Earthbath. It's all natural, soap free, and best of all it won't strip flea and tick medication from the fur/skin (that's an important thing to keep in mind if you are bathing frequently and have them on preventatives). It's expensive (WAY more expensive than my own shampoo, lol) but I'm VERY pleased with it. Honestly, I would bathe them more if I didn't think it was excessive. I know many think once a week is already excessive! I do rinse their paws and bellies when they get muddy though. I've thought about deodorants and bath wipes but after looking at some of the ingredients I've been scared off! I know their are some good companies, like Earthbath, but their products tend to be expensive so I stick with the once a week bath and forget the wipes and deodorants.

I give George a bath maybe every 3-4 weeks or so (or immediately if he rolls in mud or doodie). I take him out to exercise/socialize/play fetch for an hour plus every night. He usually doesn't start smelling like a dog until 4-5 weeks. A couple questions. How often do you groom/brush her? It's part of our ritual to brush and comb for 15 minutes every night. Helps prevent some of the corgi dust bunnies too! Not sure if that's the solution, but it can't hurt. Also, does lucy get a lot of outdoors time? I find outdoor dogs tend to smell a lot faster than indoor kids (I live in NYC and work, so George tends to spend a lot of time in my apt). To followup the other diet postings, I use Merrick food 1/4 - 3/4 mix of wet and dry, but it sounds like you have it covered from your previous post.

Hmm, we bathe the dogs maybe just a couple times a year. They just smell like dogs! It's not a bad smell, not overpowering at all. You really have to burrow your nose into their fur to find any odor. But I have grown up with pets in the house, so maybe I am just immune to it.

Lucy's smell isn't terrible, just a bit doggie. I have her eating Kirkland's chicken, rice and vegetable formula since her parents were allergic to corn. I appreciate that suggestion though!

Kirkland Signature - Chicken, Rice & Vegetables Formula

Ingredients:
Chicken, chicken meal, whole grain brown rice, cracked pearled barley, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and Vitamin E), egg product, beet pulp, potatoes, fishmeal, flaxseed, natural flavor, brewers dried yeast, millet, carrots, peas, kelp, apples, dried skim milk, cranberry powder, potassium chloride, salt, choline chloride, rosemary extract, parsley flake, dried chicory root, glucosamine hydrochloride, vitamin E supplement, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, chondroitin sulfate, ascorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, biotin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, menadione sodium bisulfite (source of vitamin K activity), riboflavin, vitamin D supplement, folic acid

I guess I am just a bit too particular. I will make surethe shampoo that I am using (Cloud Star Buddy Wash) is good for her and not stripping the oils.

Ok here is the big answer to your problem (maybe)...what kind of food do you have your corgi on? I have changed many a pup's life by asking this question at work. (I work for a very popular pet store) If your answer to this question is any food that consists of chicken-by-product and corn in the first couple of ingredients this could be a large part of the problem. I don't like to diss any dog food because some may work for some dogs however, if you switch your dog to a premium food- meaning that they use actual chicken, lamb, venison, etc. as their number one ingredient and rice as their 2nd ingredient you will find a drastic change in your dog's coat, stools, and SMELL!! I always give my personal example of my boyfriend's Jack Russell. When we first met he smelled like corn chips, he was bathing him DAILY!, he had large whelps from who knows what, and his hair was very dry. I finally after lots of begging and pleading switched him to Nutro lamb and rice (the number one lamb and rice sold nationwide) and it has changed him tremedously!! He looks like the Jack Russell off the movie The Mask now, gets lots of compliments on his coat, and hasn't had a bath in over 2 months and doesn't smell! You usually cannot find premium foods at a grocery store, you usually have to go to a Pet store like Petsmart or Petco who sell these foods. I hope this helps and if you already feed your dog a premium food hopefully it may help someone who doesn't know the nutritional difference a good food makes!!

I don't bathe Kitty at all~she has been down to the river a couple of times in the last month or so,gotten in and enjoyed the water.I tend to agree that brushing with the furminater really cleans her up.She just doesn't smell bad.

Corgis do not generally have an odor. I bathe no more than once per month unless they get into something. Sometimes it is longer. If you feel the need to bathe more frequently use a very mild shampoo as to not strip them of their natural oils. If it is really a foul smell it may be time to have the vet check the skin. If it truly has a nasty odor there may be something brewing.

I think Grover tends to stink more when I haven't brushed him for a while. I give him a bath maybe once a month or so. Usually if he's gotten dirty from running in the grass after we mow (green legged Corgi) or if he's rolled in something yucky.
We got him fixed on Monday and I haven't had the heart to torture him with a brush out with the Furminator, and he has gotten kind of smelly. I really think the brushing helps to keep the odor down.
I've never tried to spray on stuff before though> I wonder if it will just create a more funky smell by mixing the stinky dog smell with the scented smell.

I give Mei a bath once a week. People say its a lot, but I take her to the dog park and she gets a LOT of dirt on her. Brushing helps a lot with the odor, you could try that. If she gets dirty before her bathtime, baby wipes are a good option too. I have a spray on conditioner that smells good too. I'm not sure if that's the spray you were talking about. Mei usually doesn't really start to stink until after 2 weeks though. =)
