My, my! How time flies! Baby Jackson is a little over 6 months now and it's about time for his neuter surgery.

He's been the best (barking) dog a gal could ask for and he really is my little companion. Everyone in our neighborhood fawns over him and he's doing great with people and other doggies at our local park.

It's been a while since we've been to the vet, but I'd say Jackson is around 20 lbs now. All I know is he feels heavy because I'm still carrying him down the stairs (that's another story! We're working on it! lol). He looks small but is strong and growing more and more fiesty each and every day. Which brings to mind that little voice in the back of my head reminding me it's time for surgery.

I've been traveling a lot with work, but luckily I have gracious friends that are now Jackson's Aunties and Uncles and love watching him for me. As I'm looking into services, my vet charges $400 for the surgery and $65 to microchip. Kind of outrageous, right? I understand I'm not shopping for a used car here, but come on! That's almost what I paid for my little guy!!

I'm thinking of renting a car and going to the Oakland SPCA for $100 surgery and $30 microchipping. I wonder why the prices differ so much??

But, ah, the joys of being a first time pet owner in her early twenties. Haha. This really is a commitment in every single way! But with the most amazing reward of all.... adorable and everlasting companionship. <3

Hey Kari! Since you live in the SF area, you should take advantage of the free spay/neuter. They do that on the 1st and 3rd Thursday near the animal control area. Here's a flyer: http://www.sfgov2.org/ftp/uploadedfiles/acc/Documents/San%20Francis...

Kipper and I did that. The only thing I have to warn you though is that there is a limited amount of spots (they only take around 8 people). So you need to be there around 5AM to get a spot.

WOW...that is expensive...around here I just paid $128. but we live in rural MN! I think it's harder on us humans waiting than it is for our dogs! Good luck....I've had several males neutered and they've turned out just fine. He's a very handsome young lad!

Hey Geri!

I'm in SF so I think unfortunately this is the standard for my location. Even the SPCA here charges $200. So I'm thinking it might not be so terrible to drive half an hour to save some money... Hopefully I can get an appointment!

Oh, he's so adorable!
Wow, $400 is really a lot! Have you called around other vets and see what they charge? Sidney's was just a little over $100.
