Starting Puppy Kindergarten---FINALLY! What should I expect?

Stella starts puppy kindergarten this Tuesday! I've never taken a puppy to kindergarten classes before, so this will be a first for both of us. Even before I got Stella I was planning to take my Corgi to classes because of their bold reputation--which Stella is definitely living up to! She's living up to the high intelligence reputation, too, so that helps. Anyway, if you happen to read this post and want to comment about your pup before and after their first obedience classes, I'd appreciate it! I'm curious to know what to expect. Stella already knows come, sit, down, and stay. She walks pretty well on a leash but is not consistent and does not focus on me as much as she should. She's also inconsistent with other dogs, acting crazy at times and really scared others. Her classmates will be a rottie puppy and a chihuahua!! Ha ha! Funny mix, I know!

Corgis always like to be the smartest kids in the class!

So I just got back from her first class. It was ok. She's actually in with a chihuahua and a mini pinscher. She barked a lot, and she already knew all the first day stuff- sit, stay, come. I can't believe that some people's dogs don't know "sit"! That's the easiest one! She must have loved it because when the others were practicing "sit" over and over again, I just kept throwing her treats so she'd keep quiet! Next week we'll be doing some things that she doesn't know. I hope it tires her out a little more because tonight she just came back well-fed and well-rested from the car ride and she was super hyper! It definitely wore me out more than her!

LOL the trainer is so right! Bear had so much fun the first 3 or 4 weeks we went, then after that, he was a lunatic. He reminded me of the students in my middle school class - "I already know how to do this stuff, why do I have to hear and do it again just so the other kids can figure it out?!"

She's a little over 5 1/2 months old. Thanks for the comments, everyone! Actually, the trainer warned me that it's her experience that Corgis get it after 4 or 5 times and the others will want to keep repeating, so Stella might get bored! She definitely needs to improve keeping attention on me longer. Hopefully, that will be something we'll work on.

My Yoshi just graduated! He was first in his class. He loved it! He was way too smart for the basic training that our trainer taught him tricks instead. :) Thats a Corgi for you!

We loved the class. Many of the sessions were about socializing the puppy and the teacher had them interacting in pairs and larger groups. Madoc usually joined the big dogs-- he thinks he is! There was also a lot of instruction on eye contact and knowing your puppy is listening and paying attention. You are already ahead of the pack with the basic commands. Leash walking improved with the classes, and I got a lot of information on puppy care, health, and training and what to practice during the week. Stella will be a star! I felt like our instructor (though a breeder of Goldens) was disposed to like corgis!

Well Bella was the star of the class...Livvy hid under my chair the 1st time and it took her about 4 x's before she started to really enjoy the class...we had all large dogs except for a Bischon....I don't know if that's why she was scared...she's used to big dogs....you'll have fun and learn alot...I couldn't get Livvy to stay for anything and they decided that being a sight dog she did not like me putting my hand in front of her face even if it was not too close...so we worked a different way for that...the easy going St. Bernard was sooooo funny!
