Sky and Lyla's bag of Evo Red Meat is getting to that point where I will soon see the bright, shiny silver of the bottom of the bag. And this means it's the perfect time to switch them to their new diet. I have been researching raw diets for the better part of the last 8 months and have finally decided to take the plunge. I never, ever in a million years thought I would be doing this, but here we go. Sky and Lyla's new diet will roughly be:

Monday: Chicken Back

Tuesday: Pork Liver OR Beef Spleen (alternating weeks), THK Preference, and 1 Whole Egg

Wednesday: Chicken Back

Thursday: Tripe/Beef Mix (65% Green Tripe, 10% Organ, 20% Beef Trim, and 5% Trachea and Gullet)

Friday: Chicken Back

Saturday: Beef Heart

Sunday: Turkey Neck

I am excited to make this switch. The kiddos are already on Evo only in the AM and getting raw at night so I can introduce some of the richer meats to them in smaller amounts (liver, heart, etc). We make the official switch over to 100% raw as soon as this bag of Evo runs out, which I suspect will be in the next 7-10 days. Sky and Lyla have been thrilled to pieces to be getting raw every night. I am thrilled when I work up the costs and see how much money I'll be saving over Evo and Orijen (somewhere around the vicinity of $200+ a year... more if I had enough freezer room to buy this stuff in bulk!).

I would be happy to receive any constructive comments/ "tweaks" from any people who feed a raw diet and notice any imbalances. I have tried to keep everything as balanced as I possibly can.

I admire you for doing this diet for you pups :) Their immune systems will benefit tremendously. And their coats will be beautiful. Lucky pups!!!

Christine, only if the dog had some sort of disease or decreased kidney function. The digestive system of dogs is designed to handle lots of protein and no grains. The digestive system of your dog at home is actually very similar if not the same of the wolves in the wild.

Can there be a problem with some internals processing too much protein?

Thanks! I was just curious; the salt requirements of animals varies tremendously and I honestly don't know. I know horses need it, but they sweat profusely and lose a lot that way, which of course dogs don't. I know tiny amounts are necessary for function for ourselves (though we mostly get way too much!) but not sure about our furry friends..... Of course, if you feed any treats at all, they usually have some salt in them, so I would imagine that alone would be sufficient.

Good luck with your new journey! As you know already it wouldn't be my thing, but I hope your dogs thrive on it.

That's a good question Beth. I have never heard of anyone adding salt, so I don't know for sure. I modeled my menu largely after Brando's breeders schedule since it's kind of been "tested" on her dogs for the past 10 years! I do add a couple supplements as well to make sure they are getting all of those trace minerals they need.

Do you supplement salt at all when you feed raw? I know that a lot of wild animals get salt from non-food parts of their environment (licks and the like) and that domestic livestock (horses, cows, deer, etc) are all given free access to salt-licks. What about dogs? I know commercial food all has low amounts of salt added. Does the supplement you feed have salt? Or do you give a mineral supplement?

Jane, dogs don't need grains, and many people think they don't need fruits or veggies either. My dogs have been on a grain free diet for a long time, even before this. Brando's breeder feeds no fruits or veggies either, although some people do, and her dogs are healthy and thriving and have perfect blood work every year. The Preference mix I'll feed once a week is 100% fruits and veggies. I'm keeping that in there because my dogs like that stuff! =) The one thing I've noticed is that everyone who does raw does it a little different, and as long as they are getting all the right vitamins, minerals, and calcium:phosphorus ratios, it's okay!

Makes me think of when I am going to switch...don't you have to add veggies, rice supplements??? Just asking as I don't know!!!!!
