I won a free obedience class recently and today was my first class in basic obedience. I took Rosie and during the class Rosie was doing pretty good, but she got to barking and I kept trying to get her to settle down, but Rosie always barks when she gets overly excited. Towards the end of the class the instructor yelled that Rosie was pissing her off. So I took Rosie out of the ring and we left. I understand that Rosie's barking was annoying, but I was trying my best to get her to settle down. I also saw someone in the class with a german shepard who must have done something wrong because she jerked her dog, rolled him on the ground and then put her knee on him. I actually thought she was going to hit that poor dog. The dog looked confused and scared to death. The instructor also said that if your dog is in your favorite chair and you don't want him in it, you should say get your a** out of my chair. There were small children sitting around watching. I thought the instructor was out of line. Rosie knows basic obedience but in order to put her in agility, you have to attend a basic obedience class. I guess we won't be doing agility because they are the only one in the area that teaches it. Did I over react when I walked out? Should I have stayed?

Sounds like a really bad trainer! Run don't walk from this class! I guess free class is not worth it.

I agree, ask your vet for some more references, they may have some other people that are not listed in your local phone book or who might do it out of their home. Let your vet know so they no longer recommend this trainer. DON'T GO BACK AND DON'T SWEAT IT....YOU DID RIGHT BY ROSIE(she is a cutie by the way) MY DOGS ARE SITTING THEIR CUTE LITTLE CORGI STUMPS IN MY FAVORITE CHAIR WITH ME RIGHT NOW!!!!!

Wow! How unprofessional can they get? Is this a class at a pet store? If so I would complain as this is not appropriate! The trainer is there to help you not not be rude! I am glad you walked out but I think that they need to know why!

Bear was the same way in obedience classes, he always did really well, but when he got bored with the whole scene he started barking and laying on his back as if to say "enough already!" A friend of mine has done petsmart and I'm considering it, but she recommended one trainer over another. Probably a good idea to ask around - they do focus on positive training though.

It was the owner who shoved her dog on the ground, rolled it and then put her knee on the poor dog. This must be an accepted form of correction at this obedience school. Rosie is so typical corgi, lots and lots of energy. I thought agility would be a good outlet for her. But I won't put her through that just to get her into agility. Has anyone ever taken the pet training classes at PetSmart? Rosie knows her basics like sit and down, but she doesn't know how to heel.

i'm having a similar problem with my corgi's basic obedience class. She gets very excited and distracted by the other dogs, to the point where i have to shove treats in her mouth for the whole hour just to keep her from pulling and barking. The trainer barks at ME to not let her make any eye contact with the other dogs! Needless to say, neither of us absorb anything from the session. I am ready to walk out. U didn't over react at all.

I would have left too. Was there a manager or somebody else in charge? If so, let them know. That trainer needs to mend her ways or be out!

Hi Laurie, for finding positive trainers, you could check the ClickerSoluctions Yahoo Group.

Did you say that the trainer jerked and knee- rolled this German Shepard or did the owner do it??? I don't know what I would've done if someone tried this on Edward or Gem....I would not be happy I know that, As for the instructors rudeness and cursing, I guess I would complain to the owner or manager. I know if I had been in the class with you I would want to complain about this instructors professionalism. If I were the owner I would not want this person representing my business. Probably why they were giving free classes!!!!

That's shocking. What kind of dog trainer is that?? You totally did the right thing by walking out. I wouldn't stay there for that. She sounds extremely unprofessional and her training methods aren't something I'd want to learn. I feel bad for the other people in the class that probably paid to be there.
