Living 3,000 miles (without a car) from the town I grew up in creates some interesting challenges for me and my sweet baby pup. I decided to bite the bullet and book a flight to share my little joy with the rest of my family... and their chihuahuas.

I wanted to take advantage of his age and his size, because the only other time we'll be able to do this is when I get a car and drive cross-country... which won't happen any time soon...

Jackson is only 6.2 lbs right now and we're flying in four weeks, so I can't see him getting too big before then.

We're flying Airtran, who seem to be pretty lax about their rules and regulations for doggie travels. He just has to fit under the seat in front of me, be quiet, and stay in his airline approved carry-on. No documents, no age/vaccine requirements. At this time, however, he will be fully vaccinated.

The flight home is 4+ hours, but I did get a redeye (12 AM PST to 7 AM EST) there and a later flight (8 PM EST to 11:30 PM PST) on the way back home. I am hoping to keep him up literally all day on the days that we fly so he crashes out when we get to the airport. The combination of being during his normal sleeping hours will hopefully be of great advantage.

Have any of you flown with little pups? Can you offer any amazing advice? Should I drug or no? Anything I should be especially weary of?
I'm a little nervous about checking in, pottying, him being okay in the little bag, and all of that... but I'm confident that when he's out he'll be out cold.

...Just like he is in this picture. :) You can never be ready for the surprise nap attack hahaha.

Put a puppy pee pad in the carrier just in case the pup has an accident. Also carry a spare pad and a couple of plastic bags to put the spoiled pad into. Just be prepared! Also make sure that his tag has your family's phone number as well as your cell phone number just in case he should get loose enroute.

You may want to take some yogurt drops, for blood sugar levels. Although 4 hours isn't long to us it may be to Jackson's blood sugar. As mentioned I would have him get used to the carry and definately would not drug him. He is such a cutie bet he won't be any problem at all enjoy and take lots of pictures!

So cute! I flew with Ethel as a pup when I picked her up from the breeder -- two flights, only about 4 hours total in the air. Do let him get used to the carry on crate before you go. Don't drug, and stop eating well in advance of the flight, but do bring either pee pads or some kind of absorbent liner for your carry on crate. That way if he has an accident, you can clean/dispose of it just like a disposable diaper (although Ethel didn't have one -- but I was ready!). The flights (I was on Continental, I think) were very strict about not even letting her pop her head out of the bag! Be aware you'll have to take him out of the bag and put the bag through xray at the checkpoints (and it was very amusing having these very large TSA men going "ohhh the wittle pup pup going on the big pwane..." while scratching her under the chin -- you know how people react to Corgi puppies! The breeder had given me some canned food too, and there was a discussion as to whether they could allow it through, and in the end, they did. But apart from a few yaps when the first plane took off, Ethel settled in and slept the whole way. When we flew from Atlanta to Hartford, and we were landing, I pulled her little crate out and opened it up, she popped her head out and the woman next to me jumped and said, "I had no idea there was a dog in there!" Hope the same is true for you!

It's so nice that you can still fly him with you. He's presious!
I'm sure he'll sleep through the flight, just make sure you get him accusomed to the crate that you fly him in. Let him sleep in it for 4 hours a few times before the flight.

I wouldn't drug. From what I have read that is most commonly recommended for dogs who fly as crate, not with the passengers.

I think its amazing that you can fly with your dog in the cabin- its not allowed here in Australia! Hope you have fun- try and take pictures!

he is so adorable. I wouldn't drug. I'm sure he will sleep most of the flights... especially when you say you are going to keep him up all day before the flights. I would take a chew toy and put it in the bag with him. Just make sure he potty's before you check in and after you get off the plane. also, I would not give him anything to eat or drink a few hours before the flights. Have fun and take lost of pics.
