As Jane writes below, some dogs take a year, many maybe 6 months. My 14 week old puppy is progressing nicely: keeping to the schedule and using the crate seem to be the trick to help strengthen bladder/bowel control over time. Happy to say, she never eliminates in her crate and she is able to get through the night (in her crate) without a fuss; she needs to go around 5:30 am when I have to get up anyway. Now the time between elimination seems to be 3 1/2-4 hours now.

He lets me know when he want to go poop by ringing a bell.when he needs to pee he sometimes rings the bell but a lot of the time he just comes to me and pees or pees where he is standing.I've only trained one other dog and she started ringing the bell at 9weeks and never had another accident.I realize now,that is not the norm.

Some dogs aren't fully house trained until they're a year old. 12 weeks is just a baby. What specifically is happening?

Jane's right, your puppy is such a baby right now. Basically it is your responsibility to take him out regularly so he gets the idea and be sure to go out with him and praise any outdoor pottying. Check the FAQ on training.

It will take much longer than 12 weeks...pups can't hold their bladders very long at this age. Always remember food in=food out for the poop at this age you can maybe wait 15 minutes after they eat. Always make sure that after waking up and playing and even resting that the 1st thing you do is go "out". Watch for signs of smelling/sniffing as that can be a sign. Pups need to go out at least every 2 hours regularly.
