taste of the wild and urine issues
So I feed Frank TOTW and I was wondering if anybody else who fed it has had a urinalysis done on their corgis since you began feeding the food. We were doing urinalyses in class today and I ran franks urine and he had A TON of crystals. The vet said it could be food related. He had a UA done last year (before on the food) and it was normal. Just wondering if anybody else has had a UA done after feeding TOTW and if crystals were found before I rush him to the vet for $200+ in tests. He shows no symptoms of a urinary tract infection or discomfort of any kind

Yeah, definitely. That's why it's so important to feed your cat wet food! My cat offsets his lack of water intake by feeding himself off all the pretty birds and bunnies we attract to our yard. x:

Yep. My last cat liked to drink and always kept well-flushed, but this one hardly drinks and only pees once a day!. She gets three small meals a day, and either one or two of those meals is always wet food. Sometimes I even add a little extra water to the canned and mix it all in.

I haven't, but that's a good question. I switched to TOTW about 6 months ago, and Seanna has been licking quite frequently and has tons of goo in her fur around her "parts". I try to keep her trimmed down and wiped off frequently to ward off infections--we had problems as a puppy with infections and crystals. I thought about taking a UA in, but she got better once I trimmed her down more. Maybe I should...

My friend is having a problem with her Golden Retriever mix right now. She keeps bothering her lady parts and they're all irritated and inflamed. They don't know what's happening, but they did a UA and it isn't a UTI. My friend is wiping her down with baby wipes, keeping her fur away from that area, and giving her traditional UT supplements to keep infections away. Her lady parts look better, but they can tell she still feels really crappy. If they find out anything about what is wrong with her, would you like me to let you know?

I had a female corgi that kept getting UTI's, I was not feeding TOTW but it was a high protein kibble dog food. Took her in for a UA vet said she also had a lot of crystals and a very high amount of protein in her urine. Vet said to get her on a lower protein food that her body is not using all the protein and the unused protein is causing the build up of crystals. I put her on a lower protein food and the UTI problems disappeared!

there are several types of crystals and for franklin he has a type that is alkaline based, (carnivores eat lots of protein and their urine is supposed to be acidic, vegetarians have alkaline urine) so it makes me think his current food doesn't have enough protein to keep his urine acidic.

I recently switched my female corgi to TOTW. A couple weeks later the whites of her eyes started showing and her third eyelid is really prominent when she blinks. I took her to the vet. $500 later all I know is there was high protein in her urine and they couldn't find anything wrong with her eyes except low eye pressure. She's now started to have accidents in the house. The vet didn't think that her new dogfood could be the cause of the protein but now I'm not so sure!

I actually changed him to the higher protein taste of the wild at the time of this post and had his blood/urine retested in July and the crystal issue had resolved on its own. Not sure what the cause was in the first place, but he is doing quite well now on the higher protein taste of the wild. I was really hesitant to switch to a different brand of food because Frank gets so picky with kibble, but will eat TOTW happily. I'm glad I stuck with this food as he is doing great now.

I too was feeding TOTW and Seanna had crystals. She has struvites. Unfortunately, she's had crystals before, after and during the food. My vet thinks it's food related, but at this point, I'm not so sure. She's been on the Royal Canin SO diet, and she still has crystals. They say that crystals aren't always a sign of UTI. Seanna doesn't show any sign of a UTI now, but still has crystals. Her problem is with vulvitis--the vet thinks the pH with the crystals are irritating her skin. I'm clueless as to what to do. I'm spending more money on food I don't want to feed and she's not any better.

Poor Seanna. I wonder if she has stones in her bladder causing the crystals? I know you've said this before, but has she been x-rayed for stones recently, or ultrasounded? Sometimes just a General Practitioner can ultrasound the bladder and see if there are stones and it won't cost nearly what it'd cost for a specialist. Might be worth seeing a specialist at this point though, or asking your vet to phone a specialist for ideas, since you've spent so much on her and the issue is just not going away!

I just took herky in when he urinated blood. He DID have an infection but also the crystals and his ph was out of whack. He is taking antibiotics for the infection and the vet said we would have to test again in 2-3 weeks. if ph is still off then we would have to look at his diet and make some changes. So when I got home I checked our food. I've been giving them Canidae kibble mixed with a variety of canned food mixed in. Canidae, Wellness, Taste of the Wild, & a couple of others. They are all high protein. Most have been grain free. I am going to cut down on the higher protein food and see what happens.
P.S. It cost us $195 for the vet visit. Yes, of course he's worth it, but when they gave me the bill I almost needed a doctor myself!
