Hi all,

Our pup, Merlin has a bad yeast infection in two separate areas between his toes on his back feet - lots of reddish brown greasy stuff and a really yeasty smell.  We took him to the vet for general paw chewing a while ago, and he diagnosed it as yeast which was caused/exacerbated because of seasonal allergies.  He prescribed an allergy med, and gave us some other things to do that seemed to help until a few weeks ago when Merlin's human cousins snuck him about half a loaf of bread and he had a huge systemic reaction to it (naughty humans!).  He started chewing his feet and legs nonstop for about a week and was a real mess with yeast all over his paws and in his underams...we've managed to get everything under control everywhere except for the area between these toes - I think the licking makes it just moist enough to make a happy place for the fungus to thrive.

Has anyone else experienced this with a corgi?  Do you have any tips and tricks for how to help?  He is on a grain-free, raw diet, so I don't think there are any dietary things besides the bread that are contributing to the yeast.  It doesn't seem to be getting worse or bothering him too much, but I'd really like to see it cleared up and avoid another vet trip.  I've read a few places that apple cider vinegar (diluted spray or as a diluted soak) can work - any experiences with this or other treatments?

Thanks!

Amber

I have used the diluted apple cider vinegar and water with Lance for seasonal allergies in the past on his paws.  Use half and half.  I put in in a spray bottle. Hope that helps, I think it will.

I'm working on clearing up yeast on Mishka's toes at the moment.  We're almost there.

Our vet gave us a mild topical flush (DermaPet TrizULTRA +Keto) to massage between his toes and around his paw pads twice a day, in addition to some allergy meds.  We were instructed to keep his feet as clean and dry as possible (if a rinse with water is impractical, at least get them dry until you can rinse) and when we use the flush, let it air dry.

For a while I had him in a cone whenever we weren't actively engaging with him.  Now that it's clearing up and his feet itch less, I keep an eye on him and he gets to be cone-free until he goes for a foot.  Cone goes on for bedtime, too.  We got him a soft one that can be folded back half-way for easy access to water.  If he really, really wants his back feet with the cone half-back, he can get them, but it's noisy and I can intervene.

Mostly, we're just trying to be patient.  On the plus side, all this foot massaging has desensitized Mishka to having his feet handled, and nail trimming is going more smoothly.

Also, I wish they would make a paw plunger for dwarf breeds.  It would be nice to be able to rinse Mishka's feet without rinsing my own as well.

I also have used apple cidar vinegar including on ears (diluted).
