Rules to Help Dogs

Cheryl,

For
decades, unscrupulous pet dealers have imported thousands of young, often
unweaned and unvaccinated puppies from foreign puppy mills for resale in the
U.S. These puppies often suffer harsh, long-distance transport, exposed to
extreme temperatures and infectious diseases along the way. Many of them die.

On
Sept. 1, the USDA issued a proposed rule that will amend the Animal
Welfare Act regulations to prohibit the import of puppies under six months of
age for resale. This follows the congressional passage of HSUS-backed
legislation in 2008 to ban puppy mill imports, and now the law will finally be
enforced and implemented. Please
write to the USDA to voice your support of this rule before the Oct. 28
deadline, and encourage swift and aggressive enforcement.

I'm all for ending puppy mills, but isn't the HSUS one of the not-so-credible organizations? The form kind of looks like they just want your personal contact information...

Honestly, Jane....I don't know! i would think that they wouldn't be asking the small humane societies to do this if they weren't legit but ?????

Hi Jane, here's the original docket and impact analysis, read it, if you like to submit a public comment to the USDA without riding anyone's coattail, here's the link, you can also view what other breeders / rescues / regular joe / jane have to say about this there as well. Just so you know, ASPCA, even the NAIA also supports this.
