Acceptable collars for rally/obedience?
I want to buy Luke a special collar that I will use only for when we do rally or obedience, but the rules aren't exactly crystal clear. Does anyone know what exactly is accepted? I really prefer the martingale style and was contemplating a nice leather one with a partial chain, but is that considered a "training collar" since it gives a mild correction? From what I've read online it seems they definitely allow slip/choke collars so it would seem odd to exclude martingales, but you never know.
Section 17. Collars. All dogs in the obedience ring must wear a properly
fitted collar approved by the judge. No special training collars, such
as electronic collars or prong collars, will be permitted. Nothing may be
hanging from the dog’s collar.
I suppose I could just go the safe route with a plain buckle collar...but it's so boring, lol.

One thing I would caution is it can be tough to get the nice loose "J" in the leash that the obedience folks like to see with a martingale; the martingale tends to keep the leash clip positioned on top of the dog's neck. When I took Rally classes with Maddie the trainer commented that it would look nicer with a buckle collar. I don't know what is legal, but I know the "J" makes it super easy for the judge to see you've got no tension on the leash.
What I would do, personally, is use a relatively fine flat collar and a nice thin show lead. You want to give the impression you only have on a leash because the level requires one, and that the dog would do the whole thing off-leash.

you need just a regular buckle collar. I bought Franklin a pretty red leather one with black swirls. That was his rally/agility collar and he got so excited when I brought it out and put it on. You can't use a martingale or any type of collar with a choke or chain function. Has to be plain flat buckle collar. Franklin usually wears a very fine choke chain bc he hates wearing a normal collar bc for his neck size (around 16") the collars are usually pretty thick, I recently bought a fully adjustable harness for a small dog and its super thin and just cut the back piece off and use that as his collar now. Its super thin but durable and has a clip for the leash. Works PERFECT.

I've seen all kinds of collars in Rally and Obedience. I use a plain flat buckle collar on Rosie and Rocky in Rally with no tags hanging from it and a thin leather leash. I just keep the collars in their Rally bag to change into at the show. Be sure the leash is 6 ft long, no more than, for Rally since when you get to Rally Excellent, you have to do the Honor stay with the leash on the dog.
By the way, Rosie finished her Rally Advanced and Rocky finished his Rally Excellent at the Mason City, IA dog show last week end!!!! They were good dogs and I didn't even do anything to lose points for them!! Good hooman too!

In our classes we used a very tiny martigale and I still use it for Therapy Dog but I can't help. The one we used was smaller than 1/2" and you couldn't even see it. I would ask around. I actually got mine from our instructor that uses these for her min pins but I believe she uses either a stainless steel choker or a small 1/3 inch leather choker. Sorry I don't have a real awnser.

I think it also depends if you plan to do PDT or AKC. I believe AKC is a lot more strict (I think) than PDT is.

Well after a night's worth of reading (sigh I'm a nerd) it seems that martingale collars are allowed, but that in the end it comes down to the individual judge. So technically if you get a stickler judge they could ask you to change collars and that would be a pain in the butt.
I've already ordered him a nice 1/2" black leather lead so I'd like something that matches that, but UGH I hate buckles. The rolled leather collars seem to have smallish buckles on them so maybe I'll go that route. I've never used a choke, I guess I had the idea in my head that those weren't as safe? He usually heels very nicely during training, but if for some reason he decided to flip out and pull I worry about being able to control him without injuring his neck.

Jane...if you decide you want a thinner martingale let me know and I can give you our instructors email (I just emailed her today about some). She makes them and they are very small (width wise) they work wonderful...I have wider ones that I think are too bulky but it might just be me. She shows and does several things through the AKC but makes doggie toys etc. in her spare time.
