Most unlike Bubba but this past weekend-out of the blue for no apparent reason to me, he starts circling the room, comes up to me panting(not heavy) as if wanting to be petted, which I gave him plenty, he then goes away in the next room only toreturn and repeats this episode. I thought maybe he needed water, gave him that or maybe he needed to go outside. Neither of those helped.

We're in the downstairs computer room where we spend a good deal of time on the weekend and he always just lies down on the carpet close to me occasionally going to the next room to jump up on the couch and sleep awhile. That's his usual routine when I'm on the computer.not this past weekend. After several times of pacing around the room, coming up to me and looking up with those big brown eyes and receiving a hug, he circles again only this time he started pawing at an old rag I had on the floor. Now, that rag's been there probalbly a week and he never paid it any attention before. Now he's pawing at it and smelling it and dragging it about two feet from where it was and then the pacing started again.

This went on and of most of Friday and Saturday and Sunday he slowed down and got back to normal again about mid day. What was the story with all that? He did this once before but it didn't last quite this long and I have yet to figure what all this was about. He was in no pain to my knowledge and there wasn't anything different about the room or his circumstances. He never whinned or made any noise during his pacing episode...I'm clueless.

I'd say he was either a) in pain, b) felt nauseous (did you notice any drooling?) or c) was worried about something.  Perhaps the rag.   Jack will pace and pant if he is vomity or if he is worried because, say, my husband is upstairs and I'm downstairs.

It's a stress sign, but of course that stress could be physical or mental.

It really began to concern me after about 30 minutes of it. No, he wasn't nauseous but did drool a bit...sort of like they do when they've run a little. You could see wet spots on the carpet. Bubba has always been a worrier. He will come down the hall for supper when called but first he looks in the kitchen, down the steps, goes to the living room and looks before he'll eat. Saturday night I had gone into the bathroom to brush my teeth and had the door 3/4 of the way closed. When I opened it he was right there waiting on me to come out. That's out of the ordinary too. Usually when he sees I'm getting ready for bed he'll go to his crate(beside my bed) and wait for me. So, another out of the ordinary sign.

I don't know if he was stressed as nothing unusal happened that day or all weekend. We keep a pretty tight routine as I know they prefer it that way(so do I!!). He exhibited none of this behavior yesterday and was in fact, back to his old self. It still bugs me what went on in his head over the weekend. I really don't think it's physical but can't put my finger on the problem.

Constipated?

Sunday morning my daughters corgi got up at 6am throwing up and diarrhea, well, he doesnt like rice at all, but he did drink alot, by evening he was back to normal.  And now its like it never happened.  Did have a lab mix that would crawl up into your lap like a baby...found out she would do that after a seizure.  She was my sisters dog and was on some medication for her life, but you would never know it....except for the slight weight gain....lol.

Pacing would indicate some sort of discomfort...maybe a tummy ache?  Up to date on vaccinations?  Heartworm?

Bubba constipated? Looool....that'll be the day.:) I don't know what vaccinations has to do with his actions but yes, I keep up with that.

The vaccinations would not cause this. My guess is the rag or not feeling well so he couldn't get comfortable.

My parents had a dog that was heartworm positive.  They knew something was wrong cause she was restless and panting.  Although it didnt go away. She did respond beautifully to the treatment.

He just had an occult blood test thee weeks ago and it was negative. I have him checked twice a year for heart worms even though he's on Interceptor...never can be too careful. I don't know what the problem was and may never.

Was he stretching during this episode? That would indicate belly discomfort.

When I picture it in my head it sounds like Reagan sounds when he's trying to get me to play and being cheeky about it.

What it a huuufff huuufff kind of panting, like when they're tired, or a rapid kind of "hahahahahahah". If it's the latter he might be trying to initiate play with you.

Nope-no stretching. It wasn't a fast panting-more like they do if you're on the couch with them giving them a good long hug. He does that then as well. He's been himself this evening and you wouldn't know anything was going on with him this weekend out of the ordinary. They're hard to figure. many times I just wish they could talk and tell us what they want or how they feel. I'd probably have a heart attack if he did.

I don't know if anyone has seen this video but it has to be the best I've seen. It looks like this dog is definitely carrying on a conversation with his owner...so funny.
