My little guy loves to go outside no matter what the weather. Problem is, when it's the least bit wet outside his underside and chest gets completely covered in mud. We keep a towel by the door and wipe him down when we get in. It's spring now, and that means it's wet nearly every day - I'm looking for a solution to keep the mud levels down because we are going through multiple towels a day. The other day it was so bad he had to have an emergency bath when we got in - can't have a bath every day!

Does anyone know if there's a good rain coat that covers lots of the belly/chest area, or does anyone have another solution to muddy bellies? I'm tempted to try making my own coat / rain cover soon...

Thanks!

The are  dog coats that cover the belly and velcro on the back. Our Dobe has one, not that her belly ever gets dirty. I just keep a towel by the door and put one on their favorite place to lay when it is very muddy. Izzy, my real shorty often just needs her belly sprayed off in the sink. I don't do a full bath.

Sometimes I think it would just be easier to have concrete floors with a drain in the middle so I can hose the floor down daily. Mud happens alot in our area and with a dog that loves to be outside and hunt for moles.  A run through long, wet grass helps.

The Ruffwear Sun Shower Jacket doesn't cover everything, but it does cut down on the overall mess.  Mishka is modeling a size Small in the pictures below (belly panel modded so he can pee).  We only have to do the undercarriage flush if he's really gotten into something.  Plus, he gets to look like an extra in an 80's martial arts tournament movie.

We do also have one of those hoses with the multi-setting nozzles hooked up on the front porch and a stack of cheap terry rags.  That's more for rinsing his feet quickly before we come in (allergies).  It's so routine now that I can ask him to "go to the hose", and then to hold up each paw.  My neighbors must think I'm nuts.

Thanks for that info! Super helpful - I'll keep my eyes out for that brand for sure

I love the model!

It took a while, but Our 2 lay down on command to get their mud/water towelled off. This sounds weird, but those hoky shamwows really do better than towels to get the water out.The only drawback to the wet is We end up with washable area rugs in a path from their doggy door thru the hall to the family room. That way the hardwood doesn't get too trashed.Like all corgis, they have a set routine of paths, both inside and out.

I just use a damp cloth and dry towel. My Lemmy likes to think he can leap and dive all over the lace, so he his belly, legs and face always get covered in mud. If him and my coonhound are playing....his back too lol.

I meant to post this here but somehow it ended up on my blog page instead.

There actually ARE Kevlar dog vests.  And the company cuts to size.  There are many models to choose from.

Do they make kevlar vests for vacuum cleaners?

The Chillybuddy dog cooling vest is good for hot summers.

I've seen day-glo-safety-orange vests.  But such vests need to be ultralight.   http://www.mycorgi.com/photo/jack-in-his-orange-vest?context=user

We hustle the muddy dogs to their customary spot on top of the sofa (our main furniture).  During the nap, all the mud dries and falls off.  Voila!  The bed works well too.

Hint:  we go through about 1 towel a month.  It's a dog towel.  It doesn't have to be clean.

For Kadi, we play 'The Towel Game', which includes waving it from inside the house to coax her inside because rain is her favorite thing, next to snow. Brodie has a much heavier coat than she does, but we seem to have lucked out with him--he walks in and lays down belly up for us to dry him. Their wet coat isn't really so bad though, nothing like our Newfoundland was. He stayed wet from March to June, most years.

I took Penny for a long walk yesterday and here in Duluth they use A LOT of sand on the roads in the winter.  We took an hour long walk and it took me an hour long bath to get all the dirt/sand off her underside...I'm guessing I had a 5 lb bag of sand in the bottom of the tub when we were done...and even then when we got to brushing there was still dirt/sand coming off of her!   I've considered finding a seamstress to sew a one piece full body suit to use for walks!  UGH!
