What the heck do I do with this???
Sooo I let the dogs out a few minutes ago, and a few minutes later started hearing a weird squeaking noise. I run out there thinking Luke found a mouse or something, and sure enough he's carrying something around. He dropped it when told (good boy!) but I see it's a baby bunny, not a mouse. Uhhh where the heck is there a nest in my yard??? We let Luke wander around outside while I'm holding this tiny bunny...and here is where he led us. Yes that's my oregano I was hoping to cook with this summer (and my basil that hasn't been replaced yet). Sigh.
Nicely padded with all the dog hair I brushed out the other day....
Anyways I put the bunny back in the nest, Luke has a really soft mouth and it didn't seem hurt at all at least. But now the dogs are reeeeeally interested in my planter! lol! Anyone want a bunny?!?!

Not a wild bunny! haha. Good thing your dogs aren't killers. I know my cat would be eating great for the next week or so. Waffle would try to be best friends.

Oh if it had been Henry that bunny would be dead and eaten lol. Luke just likes to carry them around I think...like a real live squeaky toy!
The bunny was teeeeeny, and barely had fur on it so it wasn't exactly the cutest thing (yet). I think there's like 4-5 of them in there at least. :/ lol It totally had two ticks on it too so I feel so gross now! Ahhhhhhhghghgh creepy crawlies!

Ugh, I caught Frosty eating one of these last summer. I made him give to me and I went and disposed of it. Of course when I got back, he was just munching on the next one. Some stupid wild rabbit had made a nest inside our fenced yard where Frosty had full access and there were nine babies in it. Luckily, he only ate one before I noticed.

So Luke has apparently decided he needs to be guardian of the baby bunnies. He woke my fiance up last night acting like he needed to go out. Fiance gets dressed, takes him out, he runs right over to the planter, hoists himself up and takes a big sniff of the babies, and runs back inside. Naughty dog! lol. He hasn't tried to take another one out of the nest but he does go check on them when he's outside lol.

Awwwww, I think that's cute...momma bunny may not though. Wynn is my baby chick guardian so maybe Luke thinks this is HIS job!

Okay since I own a bunny, I wanted to say wild bunnies can't be domesticated the same as normal bunnies. They are a slightly different breed so wild bunnies often grow up very fearful and can die of fright. And also, I would recommend minimizing how much you touch them as mommy bunnies are not like mommy dogs who watch their pups 24/7 and if they smell a human scent on them, they will sometimes abandon their babies and since you were well intentioned in padding the nest with dog fur, I am also not sure if the mommy will come back ...because now the nest smells like dog . I would say that most mommy bunnies fall under the category of "neglectful mothers" because they usually disappear on their babies for hours at a time and come back maybe twice a day.
I would keep an eye on the baby bunnies and see if the mother comes back for them. If not, you might have to baby bottle nurse them.

Actually touching the nest won't make the mother abandon them according to some google sources. I am not sure. I think human touching is okay, but I still wonder about dog... whether the mommy bunny will return if she thinks her nest smells like danger. I remember that when I was young, my mom found a nest of wild bunnies in her garden and we didn't know any better because we thought the mom left them. So we put the babies in a bucket. They seemed more than few weeks old as they had fur, open eyes, and could hop around but we had no luck in trying to feed them. My mom later put them back in the nest and she said the next day the mother moved the babies. It wasn't too far of a move because we saw a few babies on some other neighbor's lawn afterwards.

Oh I didn't add the dog fur, that was already there. Apparently dog scent is not too scary to these bunnies lol. All I did was the put the baby back so I hope the momma comes back for them.

Hahah that's too funny. Yay that's good news. I just imagine this dialogue going on between the momma bunny and Luke.
Momma thinking: I am going to line my nest with Luke's fur so Luke thinks that this baby is a pup that smells like him. So he'll leave the baby alone.
Luke visits the nest, leaving a scent trail that says: Okay well if you want to use my fur, then I get permission to visit and watch them every day.. and I won't eat them
