Hi Everyone!

I am in some desperate need for help regarding eating issues/disorders with my Pembroke. He is currently 10 weeks old and weighing 11lbs (5kg). I know he is not underweight for a corgi his age but he does not eat regularly and it is VERY weighing. Especially to see a dog that isn't crazy about food, really shocked me.

Main Problem:

He does not seem interested in his meals when I present it to him. He eats his treats enthusiastically. I keep to a routine of 3 meals a day for my Pembroke and very often, I find myself having to persuade and hoax him to eat his meals. Despite MUCH persuasion and hoaxing, he still does not finish it. He would usually sniff it and walk away immediately after I place the bowl down.

Alternative Feeding Methods/Diets I have tried:

- Dry food soaked in warm water

- Dry food mixed with can food

- Dry food mixed with cooked chicken (eats the chicken, leaves the dry food in the bowl)

- Spill dry food over an area of the floor

Ever since I brought him home, I have not been able to get him to eat his meals enthusiastically. Therefore, I have been unable to maintain a regular feeding schedule.

Has anyone ever experienced this? Can someone provide me with solutions or suggestions on what I can do?

VERY much appreciated guys! thanks !!!

Our Bogart had to be coaxed to eat when we got him. We switched to Orijen, and he's been enthusiastic ever since.

I had the issue with Oscar when he was a 12 week old puppy many moons ago he got tired of the one the breeder had him on I then tried Hills Science Diet didn't like that then put him on Ekanuba loves it and I grate carrot and apple with it he loves it!. Persistance and Patience will pay off!.

Good luck!.

I think I may have found a new brand that he likes (Innova). However, how did you manage to switch him over gradually if he was no longer interested in the previous brand?

I am attempting to do the change now but he just doesn't seem keen on the food because most of it is still the old brand. Thank you !!

Hi There they say you should mix the 2 together slowly decreasing the one he does not like and increasing the new one!. They always say never cease with one and give a new one as this can upset their tummy!. It's a hard one as every individual Puppy is different?. With Sam our Australian Red Cattle Dog Cross Kelpie I just did cold turkey but he is an adult dog I would not advise this with a puppy okay!. I heard people say on this site say they use use salmom oil over the dried food for fussy pups they like the taste!. let me know how you go!. Oscar just loves food period thats why he is now on a strict diet!!!

Oscar & Sam's Dad Brian

I would check with other breeders on here or other corgi owners as some of them work for vet clinic's and maybe able to give some more accurate advise tham me Good luck!.

Appreciate the advice ! I will certainly do a gradual switch, wouldn't want to be dealing with diarrheas and vomits /:

I just want to add that your puppy will not starve himself. Do not continue to bribe him to eat by adding other tidbits to his food. He is VERY young and corgis are very smart. He will soon learn if he holds out then you will give him something better, this will create an incredibly picky eater and before you know it you will have a dog who won't touch dog food. Give him his food, keep it down for 15-20 minutes, if he doesn't eat, pick it up. He gets no food until his next meal. He will learn that if he doesn't eat in the time frame allowed he won't get to eat. It sounds harsh but if you let him control meal time now you are going to be in a world of trouble later.

Hi there!

I know I've been too much of a softie with him. Definitely will try "tough love" on him now. I'll be more stubborn than him from now on. Thanks for the advice!

Linus was a picky eater until very recently (he's now a year old). The breeder had him eating food that I thought was not good (corn, wheat and fillers were the first ingredients, yuck!). I started him on Blue Buffalo grain free (long story short, I think he's sensitive to wheat). He was free fed at the breeder, so I slowly started making his food less available. He used to get two meals a day, but would not eat the early meal. Now he gets one meal a day and he eats it.

They will not starve themselves. Linus went three days without eating one time and I was freaking out, but he was fine. He finally ate when he was hungry, and was still taking treats. Unless he is vomitting or has diarrhea, or seems to be losing weight, he will eat when he's hungry. Linus is on the skinny side for a young adult, but I think that's better than overweight.

Hi Jen!

Thanks for sharing your experience with me. It's so comforting to hear that you went through a similar experience with your sweetheart.

Can I please ask if Linus eats regularly and finishes his meals now? Can you please share with me what you did to help Linus overcome the eating issue phase? Thank you!!!

Ace was a picky eater (it makes me laugh to type that, now) when he came to my home at 16 weeks. Now, he'll eat anything and everything, but it did help to swap proteins/foods until I found one that "worked". I hope Innova does the trick for you! Seeing as you've got a corgi like the rest of us, though, I bet in a few months' time you'll be scratching your head and wondering why on earth you ever thought your dog was picky! These two breeds are like furry vacuums. :-D

Hi Ludi,

Thanks for the comment. So did Ace change from a dog that's not keen on food to one that is very food-oriented now?

Can I please ask what you did to help Ace overcome the "eating issue"?

Was it just placing the bowl down for 20mins during meal times and taking it away if he doesn't touch it? I tried that method yesterday and he actually refused to eat the entire day ... Fed him his breakfast this morning and he ate barely half of it (had to hoax him to finish up the rest of it).

It's so worrying because I'm afraid he will be malnourished for a puppy. So frustrating to see him sniff and walk away from the bowl :(((
