corgi sighting: Prairie Home Companion -- anti-corgi slur

5/25/13  Welsh corgis made a cameo appearance on NPR's "A Prairie Home Companion" in an episode of "Guy Noir, Private Eye".  Mr. Noir is in Washington, D.C., and is approached by various politicians seeking suppression of unflattering photographs of themselves.  A senator from Tennessee has been photographed walking his wife's corgis, and this is not the sort of macho dog a Tennessee senator should be seen with -- he'd prefer coon hounds or hunting dogs -- "... a corgi won't hunt nuthin' but bonbons in the upholstery..."

This portrayal, although fictional, perpetuates a stereotype of corgis as pampered, blow-dried show dogs.  We who actually own these sturdy animals know they will hunt anything edible anywhere, anytime -- with a rather relaxed definition of the word "edible" .

Let's all write NPR to request a public apology from Garrison Keillor.

Corgis have "appeared" on the show more than once.  The late Tom Keith, their original sound effects genius, included a Welsh corgi in a display of his animal sounds repertoir -- it was only a "yip", but any corgi person would recognize it instantly.

Oh let the general public keep their misconceptions about Corgis. That way we can keep them to ourselves and they won't go the way of other popular dog breeds and become neurotic little messes!! I always list all the negatives about Corgis-they shed, they bark, they eat like pigs, they herd little kids after I tell people "oh yes, they are nice and cute and smart but.....". Keep the LCS, Lesser Corgi Society, strong in their determination to keep Corgis and their fairy powers a well kept secret!

How dare you Garrison Keillor...I haven't listened for awhile but I do think you need to get set straight about our beloved Corgis...I'm not too worried about people wanting to run out and get a corgi as many people probably think they are too strange of a creature to want one.

Oh, does this mean I get to send NPR a picture of the huge gross rat Fauna killed?

I knew I'd have a good use for that nasty rat picture I took!  I sent this to PHC.
Dear Mr. Garrison Keillor,

I heard you made fun of corgis last week.  I would like to present you with some evidence that corgis are tough, manly dogs in a small package.  My dog, Fauna, is a killer of squirrels, rats, and cockroaches.  She swims in rivers (with no fear of alligators) and climbs hills with a smile on her doggie face.  Before she was my pet, she spent months roaming the Louisiana country side with a pack of other dogs, living off of squirrels and garbage.  She's one tough corgi.  As are most corgis.  They were breed to be short so they'd have a low center of gravity and could recover from being kicked by cows and sheep.  What would break the legs of a collie is nothing for a corgi.

Evidence of corgi hunting skills for Guy Noir:
The rat Fauna caught and shook to death in my house today.  It wasn't the partying that killed the rat, it was the corgi!

The rat murderer:
Don't let that goofy smile fool you, Fauna is one vicious dog when she needs to be.

I make fun of corgis too, but Mr. Keillor, I thought you should know that corgis are real dogs for real dog owners.  They aren't teacup poodles or yorkies. They are wolves with tiny legs!

Thanks for reading my letter, Mr. Keillor.  I hope next time you make a joke about corgis, you at least make one that's true!

I agree with the "LCS", lets keep the awesomeness of corgis just among ourselves.  Let the ordinary people have regular dogs!

My old hound dog could hunt in the upholstery way better than my corgi! His picture could make a good companion piece to Fauna's.

So wait, a fictional character in a work of fiction by Keillor said this and you think it's Keillor's personal opinion?   Let me ask you this---is the senator a positive character?  If not, do you think perhaps that Keillor might be more on your side than you think?:)
