For some reason, shed hair is a factor a lot of people consider when they're looking into getting a dog or a cat.  For Corgis in particular, I've seen quite a few people just turn down the prospect of a Corgi because they shed. Most websites say Corgis shed "a lot" or "twice a year" or whatever.  That's all just blatantly false.  Allow me to explain with a picture.

What you see above is a picture of my trash can, which just happens to contain the bowels of my vacuum cleaner.  Not only is the bag absolutely stuffed after, at MOST, 5 uses, there are many dense columns of hair beneath the bag.  That was the hair that was clogging the entire length of the hose.  Five times vacuuming my 900 sq ft apartment resulted in this tragic scene.  Five.

So, I have to say again, what they say about Corgis shedding just isn't true.  They don't shed "a lot" or "twice a year".  They shed enough to clothe an entire tribe of Inuits for three winters. They shed enough that a single household of Corgis fills 80% of the local landfill space with shed hair.  They shed enough that you will find Corgi hair in your food in a restaurant 400 miles from your home.

Don't believe the hype. Spread the truth TODAY!

Bwahaha roomba with a furry dog. Maybe they've gotten better since I had one, but that itsy bitsy cannister filled up  after one room for us... and we only had a cat and a dog at the time--both short hairs! We have a Kirby now that does a good job, when I get off my lazy and vacuum >.>. I am happy that it manages to get every scrap of fur off the couch, chairs, floors.... wherever Lainie ends up making her sleepy spot for the day.

Oh, really, Rachel? I've had to empty my Dyson Animal FIVE times while vacuuming my house ONCE. That's 1800 sq ft, twice the size of your apartment. Do the math.

I do follow John's advice to vacuum infrequently, but for different reasons. He noted the potential ear damage. Well, add that noise level to the noise of the corgi that is barking madly at the vacuum. I do think she could kill it.

My first corgi put holes in the Kirby.  He would attack it.  Max...I have to run over him with the Dyson to get him to move.  Katie just keeps her distance.

Just curious, how old are most corgis before the shedding really starts? Marshall is 4.5 months old (granted, he's a corgi mixed with probably a lab), but the shedding hasn't been bad at all so far. I brush him once a week or so, and my vacuum has no problems keeping up with the hair.

Katie has a normal corgi coat, Max is a fluffy.  You would expect the fluffy to shed the worst...nope.  When Max blows his coat it is clumps that can easily be picked up by hand as you walk thru the house, Katie just walks across the floor and you can see the fur flying.

Now the actual worst for shedding in this house is Graycie, my wayward alley cat.  When I comb her I get more fur off her then I do off both corgis and the other 2 cats combined.

Thanks for the laugh!
My Loki is close to a year old so this is his first summer. He shredded pretty well at the beginning of winter, but now, MY GOD! I just got done giving him a good combing and he looks noticeably thinner. It's pretty ridiculous.

I took Max & Katie in for grooming today, told her that both were starting to blow their coats.  She was laughing when I picked them up, said she got enough fur to make 3 more corgis and that was before she even trimmed fluffy Max.  I had a snowstorm of fur in the car driving home.

I guess I'm a little lucky that Lainie is only half Corgi because at least her fur doesn't clump up like a tumbleweed on the hardwood floors. But this latest bath was just horrendous as far as fur is concerned. I got off a quarter of the amount as usual and thought, hmm! maybe brushing her is paying off? Not so much! She stepped out after being toweled off and puffs and puffs of fur just fell off.

I don't know about purebred corgi fur patterning, but do they have the crazy zig-zag on their backs? It is the worst for trapping fur and I can literally pinch off handfuls of fur

"Crazy zig-zag"?  Do you mean an area of really dense overcoat?  Waffle has that, and you're right, it's a horrible undercoat trap.  I could brush him for hours there and still get hair off him, but I can't say the same about the sides of his legs or his neck.

Amen to your post!  We have two Corgis and it is a year-round nearly impossible task to keep up with the dog hair.  I had them groomed once (to deshed) and it lasted for almost two weeks.  Too expensive to keep up for that purpose alone.  We have a pet rhoomba and a miele and have to run them constantly.  Sigh
