Hi.  This is weird.  My corgi, Ella is almost 4 years old.  We have had a caged cockatiel since the day Ella came here and she never had a problem with it.  Suddenly, she is scared of every little sound coming out of my bird.  My bird (Ruby) is very old and has been falling off her perch a lot lately so I don't know if this new development is what's scaring her or not.  Ella used to lay on the couch beside me all the time but won't even stick around in the living room where the bird is kept.  She will either run upstairs or hide out in a back room.  I'm not sure what to do.  It's weird.  Wondered if anyone else has birds and corgis and if so, do they get along ok?

I'm wondering if Ella is sensing your bird is sick and that is upsetting her.  It's the only thing I can think of if she has always been around the bird but now that the bird is old and not doing well it could be upsetting.  Dogs react to things in ways we don't understand.

I have noticed that my dog, and I assume other corgis, are very tuned into other people and pets in their environments. If Ella seemed to enjoy or even just ignore your cockatiel's company until now, and she is a distressed since the poor thing is falling off her perch recently, I wonder if she is worried about the bird. My dog acts very weird around birds. She tries to chase chickens and less so, ducks, but I am not sure if she is hunting or herding. At first she got excited or stressed out when she first saw birds in cages. She would look at me pleadingly and run to the cage then look at me again. Not sure how to read it, but she seems to care about their well-being. Who knows? I sense any distress of an animal in our circle of family and friends may make her act strange and fearful. I know she sometimes acts odd and fearful if I am visibly ill and she may do so toward animals if I had other pets. Sorry your cockatiel is not at its best. Perhaps it also let out an odd noise or two recently that was kind of scary for Ella. I hope he poor bird is comfortable. I am sure it is hard to see it struggle. Wish you the best!

I also think Ella is reacting to distress in the bird.  I would have a Vet who is familiar with birds take a look....and if the Vet can't find anything wrong, I'd still place my bets on Ella!

Thanks everyone for your replies.  I really didn't think of that but it makes sense.  I may need to take my bird in for a checkup!  As I type this, Ella is upstairs in our bed :(  However, if she hears the rustle of my husband's fig newton wrapper, she will be down in record time, lol.

Call me superstitious if you like, but...i have this weird theory that dogs sense or "know" a lot more than humans do -- or rather, that they sense things in terms that are different from ours. The bird is falling off its perch? That's not a real good sign, in Bird Language. Suspect your dog understands something is seriously wrong but is no position to understand what it is, being neither a veterinarian nor a bird.

I'll bet your dog is not afraid of the bird. She's afraid of wrongness. I think dogs know what is normal and what is not normal and are disturbed by the latter.

Sorry. That sounds really woo-woo, but it's the only way offhand I can think of to express this strange idea.

@ Vicky, the only thing strange about your idea is that you call it strange  :-D

There is good science to support that even plants react to life being threatened of harm ( whether human, animal, plant or sometimes single cell ) and even at great distance under certain conditions of attachment.
