I don't have a Corgi of my own yet, but plan to get one this summer. I've done a lot of research, read a lot of articles, as well as many discussions on various online forums and blogs, but one thing that I have hard time finding good information about is a good list of similarities and differences between the two Corgi breeds.

From what I've read, the differences I found so far are as follows:
- Cardis are slightly bigger (taller/longer) than Pems
- Cardis always have a tail while Pems maybe be born with a natural bob-tail or have it docked at a young age
- Cardis also have larger, rounder ears than Pems
- Pems come in red/white, sable, or tri colors, Cardis come in all of those, plus various brindle and merle variations
- Cardis are generally said to be more calm, while Pems are knows for their hyperness

If you have anything to add onto this list or to correct it, please do reply. I'd love to hear thoughts on personality differences especially since that's not as obvious as the different looks.

In our puppy search this time last year, my boyfriend and I looked into both breeds. Originally, we were dead set on a Pembroke, until a rescue contact talked to us about Cardigans (she had one up for adoption, and even though the one she has was inappropriate for us and the timing was wrong, it was a very informative conversation!). Although most if the personality/temperament difference will be a matter of the individual dog, I've found that Mac, as a representative of Cardis in general, is a little more laid back than the Pembrokes I've met. Mostly the temperament of your dog, though, is going to be a matter of how well you socialize him/her. I also have to admit that I really LOVE Mac's tail, and it's fun to educate people about Corgis because people rarely have any idea what breed of dog Mac is :) Go with the breed that speaks to YOU...and good luck with you pup :)
Hi all, newbie here. I agree with Debbie, who said that true Cardi people might have a harder time with a Pembroke than a Pem person with a Cardi. I got my first corgi, a Pem, over 15 years ago and, while I loved him, there were some aspects of his temperament I wasn't wild about. Nevertheless, I had planned on another Pem this year, until I had the opportunity to acquire a Cardi, and I'll never have another Pem. The Cardi just fits me SO much better. It's not a matter of one being better than another, just different people being more suited to one than another.
I adopted Joey this summer and the more I read the less I know about Joey's being a P/C.
While he doesn't have a tail that doesn't mean it couldn't have been docked. If you want to see Joey and take a guess at his Pembroke/Cardigan identity I'd like that... in ANY case I love him to death. He and my Sheltie (Toonie) are best buds, though quite different considering they're both herding dogs.
Joey definitely looks like a Pembroke to me. He is a very nice looking dog. It is great that you rescued him.
All corgis are awesome, but personally, I'd choose a Pembroke! I'm getting him in 3 days!!
they both have a lot of hair!
I have heard that Cardis are a bit more reserved with strangers than Pembrokes.
I agree with they tend to be a bit reserved with strangers but they still love people, they just want to know who you are first and then they love you....they need to trust the stranger....lol
Oh, I think that it would actually be a plus. I am pretty reserved with strangers myself, and my corgi's... exuberance, much as I love it, gives me more cause for explaining than I prefer.
We're learning our manners, though. >)
maybe roxi is part cardi then because her friend corgis just bound up to people but if they try to pet her she runs away like they're about to strangle her. I joke with people saying she's a typical girl at a bar ;) has to get to know you a couple times before she's your friend.

though if you're a kid that's a whole different story. She looooooves children.
I think I would get a Cardi if they were smaller, but I still prefer the look and personality of Pems :)
Hey all. I was dead set on a pem, but lately I've been going back and forth between pems and cardis. I'm not sure which would better suit me. I'm planning on getting one when I graduate (2011) and will most likely be in an apartment by then. I know there are exceptions to the generalizations, but which is generally better for smaller spaces and for a first time dog owner? Any input is appreciated!
