We took Midas to the dog park today and he was fine until he got home. He started favoring his back right leg, and it has gotten a little worse since then. He still is active and wants to play so he's not down and out about the situation. He is just very gentle with his back leg, sometimes lifting it up completely when he walks. We are thinking he probably strained a muscle or tendon but we can't be certain. What is the usual treatment/prognosis for a strain? We have been rubbing his leg frequently and are thinking about caging him so he has limited motion.

Limiting his activity and space is probably a good idea while he recovers, at least for the first few days. If it continues, you may want to have his leg checked out by your vet.

Good luck,
Cathi
Midas will gage his own ability, caging him will not be necessary, sprains can occur quite often, give it a few days, he should be back to normal in no time.
How old is Midas? If he's a puppy he may not have enough sense to take it easy-if he feels better he may overdo it-they are tough little dogs, and not good about showing that they're really hurt-limit his activity for a few days and if he's not better, I would have him checked out in case it's a partly torned acl-you can use ice packs (frozen peas or corn work well) for 10 min. several times a day-depending on what the injury is, it can take awhile to heal
I would see the vet if it is not better in a couple days. Could be just a sprain or something more serious.
Magnus did this once when he was about 9 months old. I totally freaked out and took him to the vet right away. He was (and is) fine - just a muscle strain. We were supposed to keep him "quiet" for a couple of days, that lasted about an hour after we got home before he decided he needed to play with his sister.
Like a mother, you know your own dog. Use your intuition. Don't take the advice of people not eyeballing the situation. Go to a professional if you feel you need it.
If you search in the forum under limp, limping, you'll find other discussions like this one. But it seems like the first course of action for a sprain, a torn ligament, or even dysplasia is rest and anti-inflammatories. Bertie did that a lot for a while -- he'd limp after strenuous exercise -- and the vet could never pinpoint anything, so I would rest him up and give him a low dose of Rimadyl. Just this month, we started learning agility (Bertie is 5), and after our second class, he was limping and favoring his back leg again -- always after resting up for a bit, not a traumatic and sudden stop while running or anything. So I got him this "natural" anti-inflammatory called Duralactin (not as many side effects as Rimadyl) and a glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM supplement and kept him very quiet (leash walking only, no jumping on/off furniture, no high speed running) for about two weeks. By the end of the first week he was vastly improved. So I'm now decreasing the Duralactin but will keep him on the Gucosamine forever. But I would chat with your vet -- if he's young, it could be panosteoitis (kind of like growing pains) as well -- which is usually self-limiting but the vet can tell you the best course of action. Good luck!
