I have a three year old Pembrooke Welsh Corgi that I have had for about a year. I adopted him from a friend after he snapped at her new baby. I have read that Corgis are good with other animals and kids. He will fight with any dog and is extremely territorial. My parents have a 120 pound black lab and my sister has a 100 pound black lab that he will fight with. When I say fight I mean he has made both of the dogs bleed. He also fights with my roommates tiny 10 pound dog. I don't know what to do to make him stop. Whenever he does it I spank him and tell him no and then we try to bring the dogs back together after a few minutes to make them be nice to each other in a way to "make them apologize" to each other. He is an extremely sweet dog with me and other people but as soon as another dog is introduced to the situation he becomes extremely aggressive. I am also paranoid to have him around any children because of why I got him. Any help would be great!

Get in touch with a trainer with that uses positive reinforcement training and has experience with aggression-you need someone to come to your house and start you working with him at home before you could do classes. At 3 years of age, it will take alot of time of you working with him under the trainers guidance. Any aggression from you (spanking him) isn't working for you, rewarding calm behavior around other dogs will-but get help!
That is great help. Thank you!
You really do ned a professional trainer. At 3 he has obviously developed some bad habits. The Dog Whisperer also does some good shows on dog aggression. His DVD's can be rented but I would still get the advice of a trainer, preferably one that works with some of the more dominant breeds. Corgis can have quite an attitude. Remember they were also used to herd cattle. Takes a little bit of a Napoleane(spelling?) complex.
Take meticulous observations about the set and setting of each incident. You almost have to see it coming in order to discern the antecedents that set it off. You may have to dig into the animal's history (McConnel recounts such a story in The Other End of the Leash -- turned out the attacks weren't inexplicable; the dog only attacked people who smelled like pizza becuse it'd been kicked by a pizza delivery boy as a puppy). You may have to put such a chain of events together. Don't give up.
As Wendt Worth Corgies what she thinks.
The Other End of the Leash is one of my favorites! Pat McConnel used to have a show on Animal Planet that was great! Unfortunately she wasn't as dramatic as the stuff they have on now so it apparently fell by the wayside.
Don't use the dog whisperer. Some of his advice is good, but only if you know what you should be doing and what is going wrong. I would more reccomend Victoria Stilwell from "It's Me or the Dog". Be firm, but not agressive. Most aggression (like the spanking) will probably just make the situation worse. And as everyone else has said, get a good trainer! That will help you out so much in the long run!
Hi Samantha: Please keep us posted as you and your corgi go through training together. I've read the responses to you and there is some good advice there. My three corgis have altogether different personalities. Keep up the good work! All the best from Williamsburg, VA: Nancy, Bear, Tasha and Linus
