We are looking into getting another wonderful Corgi to add to our family, and the subject of tails/docking length came up.

What is the preferred dock length? We notice Corgi's have all different lengths of nubs, or no nubs at all (like our Midas). We were wondering does the vet dock by the number of vertebrae down the spine? If so, what number vertebrae is the preferred length?

We do prefer Midas's lack of a nub/smaller nubs on Corgi's, but is this the right length? Is there even such a thing as the right length?

Thoughts and comments are appreciated! :-)

under 2" as long as it does not detract from the body is standard iirc.
If you are not showing a nub or natural tail is great fun to see wagging!
The show breeders generally remove the tail pretty much completely.

Not sure if they would leave a natural bob that is short enough. I have heard they can, but haven't had any direct experience with it.
I found this on the AKC website, hope it helps:
"Tail--Docked as short as possible without being indented. Occasionally a puppy is born with a natural dock, which if sufficiently short, is acceptable. A tail up to two inches in length is allowed"

My Ella was born with virtually no tail, so the breeder didn't need to dock hers. She has maybe a 1/2 inch little piece of skin/tail under all of her fur. If she gets excited the little nub with wiggle a bit, but it's hard to see since she has a furry corgi butt.

if you intend to show, then there is a "right" length of two inches or shorter.
If you are not showing, there is no right or wrong, it's jsut a matter of what appeals to you and what you like.
Grissom has virtually no nub. You can only see where it once was when he tries to wag it. It's adorable.
