1.I only recently learned from my last AKC class that they do not recommend the snap collar because if your dog were to get scared (or whatever) and run this could open and you could have a collar with no dog at the other end. I use these collars at home now beacause I'm worried of my dogs getting hung up in our grove or caught on something else but I do put on a regular collar when away from home now. I never thought of this but it makes sense!

2. If you have old collars or leashes you don't use anymore...donate them to a humane society or rescue! I tend to buy more than I need or they fade or I just don't use a collar so I have a co-worker who works for the humane society that I give mine to and they are more than happy to recycle/reuse what I no longer want and they many times don't have enough so this helps them out also! I'm sure you could just drop them off...it's a small thing but I feel that I've helped!

Buckle collars....I could not think of the word I wanted to use for the regular collars .
I have never had a problem with snap collars, I have had issues with the buckle collars where the little bit of metal that holds it in place breaks and there goes the dog.
My big problem was with retractible leashes. My puppy morgan has developed a taste for nylon and eats thru it. Well he dedided to eat his retractible leash by pulling on it and eating the middle. When we were outside he pulled on the leash and he was off. I had the plastic part in my hand and he was running free.... straight into the road. He got tackled, I jumped him. He hasn't tried to eat a leash since. I guess being pounced by a fat person would be enough to scare him into good behavior lol.
ok I've had dogs chew leashes but never used a retractable one...that was good that you could catch and tackle Morgan...I don't think I could catch mine! Hey if being pounced on worked....that's great!
I really, REALLY don't like buckle collars - they aren't very safe. If your dog gets away from you, for whatever reason, on a walk, giving you the bum rush out of the car, they could get their collar stuck on something and end up strangling themselves. The snap collars are supposed to break to prevent this. I have no idea how a snap collar could just mysteriously "open," unless not clicked in, but last weekend my dog's leash did unsnap itself. I must not have put it on properly... unfortunately it was at the start gate at an agility trial LOL. LOOSE DOG!! hehe

I've only ever had one single instance of a snap collar breaking in my long history of dog ownership - and that was because my rambunctious young mutt pulled on the corgi's collar until it broke. Thank God! If he was pulling that hard, who knows what would have happened with a buckle collar.
Thats why I have always used the snap collars...just in case they do get hung up especially in the country...I would hate to think of any dog getting stuck and no one finding him/her...not that my dogs leave the yard but it could happen.
It makes me feel better about the snap collars from what I hear and I have never had a problem either. One of my pups had a collar come off but that was from too much chewing or playing with litter mates and it was also a cheap collar just to get them used to a collar! I plan on going back to this instructers class again so I will question her more also.
Oh how awful! Whether for children or adults....thanks for your story even though it's sad!
I have never heard of this type of collar and just googled it to see what it is. Ella wears her collar 24/7, can these be on all the time or do they slip off? Also what about pulling, do they work if the dog sometimes likes to pull?
Goodness, I never thought of that. Hmmm. I don't worry about Jack around here with the snap collar, but what about on the road? Kerry's highway rest stop story freaked me out.

Where can you get those cheap kennel leads? The all-in-one loop kinds? Seems to me they'd be a good choice for traveling.
I think so too....I think I've seen them at the pet store I go to but I just never paid attention to them...
