I'm traveling towards the end of the year and my fluffy Corgi will be almost a year old when we take the trip. At 14 weeks, he's weighing 15 lbs -- big ol' fluff ball. His breeder said she'd flown with one of her dogs in a soft-sided Sherpa bag, under the seat, and he did GREAT... I'm going to ask her about the size of the bag she used -- but I'm curious -- have any of you flown and what type of bag did you use? I certainly don't want him in Cargo -- I want him with me, under the seat (it's not that long of a flight) but I'm concerned about him fitting!

My male cardigan at a year was close to 30lbs - no way would he fit under a seat - pem's possibly. my female cardi is 23 lbs, but she is still 36" long. I do always defer to the breeder, and my vet - check with them. Another option for you to check with is anyone who "shows" their dogs in the "big" shows that are across the country - if they don;t drive the dogs there, then they fly them, and alot of those owners will not put their dogs in cargo. I don;t know where u are - but you can check the AKC site for your area, see if there are any performance clubs and contact the director and ask his/her advice on traveling via air with your dog
Thanks everyone... Turns out they need to be able to stand up AND move around in the cage, regardless of the duration of the flight. And, their website didn't list it, but there's a 20 lb weight limit. He's 15 weeks and 15 lbs -- no way he'll be under the 20 lb weight limit at a year old! I'll either have to board him or find someone to dog sit... Thanks for the advice ;)
Hi-
I went to Kentucky to pick up my 20 pound girl a few months ago. Because I could fit her in a Sherpa bag, they let her into the cabin with me. If she'd been bigger, I don't think that plan would have worked. Tuck fit in okay; but if we'd been travelling farther, she may have been uncomfortable eventually. It helped that once we got settled, I partially unzipped the bag so she had the option of sticking her head out occasionally. The stewardesses were nice and pretended not to notice. It also certainly helped that Tuck was quiet as a churchmouse!
Mind you, I had just met this dog, and she travelled like we'd been doing it together all our lives. It was a great trip; and I was really lucky she was as easy as she was. Also, when we got to the terminal, I carried her with her head out of the bag. Man, I felt like a rockstar (okay, maybe a rockstar's chaperone)! Everyone wanted to stop and pet her.
I did learn that one of the tricks to flying with your dog is to make his/her reservation early. I was told that most of the airlines only allow two dogs in the cabin per trip. The nice thing is that you don't pay until/unless you show up with the dog. I have had people tell me they wait until the last minute to make a reservation with no problem; but when I made my reservation, I was told I was lucky to get the second spot on my flight.
Best of luck!
Hi there, I have a couple questions about flying with Corgis in the cabin. I'm picking up my pup during the first week of December and am planning on flying him from Seattle to Los Angeles for Christmas (he'll be about 15 wks old by that time).

What size Sherpa bag did you use? Medium or large?
Which airline did you fly?
Any other tips? :)

Thanks for the advice!
at 15 weeks i think anything under medium should fit. Remember your sherpa will count as your carry on. Also depending on which airline you fly, they all have different requirement. Here's Jet Blue and they do fly your cities, they have all their rules listed here.
hello there, I work for Norhtwest Airlines and we have a program called Pet Priority. Your pet has to be under 14 pds or less to fly in the cabin with you. Over 20 pds have to go in the cargo bin. Its climate controlled- what the temperature you have in your cabin is whats in the cargo bin. The flt crew will be notified that they have pets inthe cargo bin and will adjust the temperature accordingly. He will be picked up at the ticket counter and taken to an air conditioned van and driven to the plane at departuere time. When he is loaded on the flt. you will get a ticket saying your pet is on board with you. Don't worry about your corgi being neglected ----- we love pets. They are the highlight of our day. Everyone treats them as if they own them. If you want us to water them we will and they will not want for attention. Make sure that he can sit, lay down and stand up in his crate otherwise he won't be able to go. A small toy will be okay and something soft to lay on. He will be fine.........
Thanks Darlene for the info!
Yogi, this website has great advice on flying with your dog: http://www.bcrescue.org/flying.html

I've flown with my Corgi and will probably never do it again...While he was fine, I was shocked at how rough the baggage carriers were with his crate when they were unloading...American Airlines heard some "choice" words from me.
Thanks for sharing your experience Plato! I guess it's kinda hit and miss when it comes to baggage handlers, it would be nice if the job requirement had "must love dogs" :) what kind of crate did you use by the way?
Oliver flew from RI to WA when he was 5 and would never get back in his crate after that and he always loved his crate. lucky we drove back 2 yrs later with 2 corgis and they did great opal was 8 mos at the time, but back to flying if we had to we would but I was a wreck for months knowing it would be hot it was august and very hot he had a pill to make him sleepy (don't really know if it worked) and when we changed planes in PA I was on the tarmac and they let me go to the crate and I had put a bottle of water in the crate and it was not hot (I thought i could gage the temp by if it was hot when I got him) and gave him some but he was wiped out when we got him in Wa he laid across the back seat of the rental like he owned it with his leg's straight out. I tried every way to get him up in the cabin with us but they wouldn't he was too big.I would have bought a seat but they said no.
I really wish you could buy a seat and bring them! I read a story once by one of the founders of Best Friends about when he picked up a German Shepard rescue and the flight arrangements had somehow not been made where he pretended the GSP was a seeing eye dog. It was very funny but I guess it would be tough to try to pass a corgi as a seeing eye dog! LOL
