Corgi coat

I have a 1 yr old tri male, and his coat is thin and quite coarse, whereas my 3 yr old female has a silky soft coat. I have no other experience with Corgis, so is it normal for Pembrokes to have coarse coats?

Yes, your Pembroke standard coat is coarse on top with a lighter undercoat. It is the undercoat that will shed. A fluffy coated corgi (breed standard default) will have a longer, softer and silkier coat. It too will shed.

According to breed standard, their outer coat should be coarse. I find that Dax is very soft everywhere except the fur on his back is coarse. He's still pretty soft in general, but I wouldn't call the fur on his back silky. Everywhere else is though. :) Maybe the females are just softer. Heh.

Thanks for the info. My female is soft all over, but not fluffy. The male is very coarse all over, with almost no undercoat.

Hi! Your one-year-old is probably just out of coat. Jack has a harder outer coat. In winter he has a very thick undercoat, but right now he's out-of-coat and just has the coarse guard hairs. His undercoat will probably start coming in next month.

Madison is our female and she's a retired show/breeding dog. The breeder we got her from said she's "fluff-factored" which means she carries the recessive fluffy gene but is not herself a fluffy. She has a much silkier, fluffier coat than Jack. It's lovely and soft. The downside is it does not seem to repel dirt and water quite as much as Jack's.

Depending on your climate, your male will probably get an undercoat soon. The density of it will be influenced by whether or not you have cold winters.

My father in law had a female who had the typical coat with coarse hair on the back and since she passed they adopted a tri boy who is all silky (not a fluffy). My Cardigan is very smooth and soft everywhere except along his back where the hair is more coarse and wavy.

I agree with Beth that he may have just lost his undercoat and hasn't started his undergrowth. Actually my 15 month old is probably about the same right now as she blew her coat and just has the coarser outer hair right now. It also took my 2 year old a long time to get her full coat as she had shorter finer hair but at about 18 months she had a beautiful coat growth! I believe what you're seeing is very normal! Since they are a double coated dog I think time will remedy this!
