I am not sure I spelled that correctly, but our girl Libby has been hyperventilating a lot today. She usually doesn't unless she gets really excited when we go outside.

She is laying under my husbands feet and just started for a little bit.

It comes and goes. Its not an all-the-time occurance.

Does anyone else experience this or have any insight as to why this is happening?

It sounds like a reverse sneeze. :)
This is pretty common in some breeds. The first time I saw it was at a dog show and the corgi handler just blocked the nostrils so the dog could breath out of his nose and it went away. It did not appear to be any big deal. My dog Sparty does it sometimes.
My corgi mix Bruce does this "reverse sneezing" often. Rubbing his throat in a downward motion helps him.
Thanks everyone for the replies!! She hasn't been doing that anymore. So thanks again!
This is definitely the reverse sneeze and its horrible to watch at times. Freaked me out the first time I saw it. Calm them sometimes helps and blocking the nostrils til they swallow works too. This happens more during high shedding so try to keep the fur at bay will help. That means vacuuming and keeping their beds washed.
yup, Soffie does it once in a while too. she did it once while we were at the vet and he said it was nothing. he said it's hard on us humans to watch but it actually isn't harmful to the dog. my sister had a 2 mini dachshunds that did the same thing, so I wonder if it's more common in long body breeds?
I don't recall ever having a dog who did not do this on occasion. Sometimes it sounds like they have a bit of congestion when they do it. They can't blow their nose, after all! LOL

The only issue we have is if one dog does it, the other freaks out a little thinking something is wrong.
Finnigan does this too. I didn't realize it was reverse sneezing until I posted the same question. He ususally does it when he's laying in his crate at bed time. It goes away on it's own pretty quickly. I hate it even though I know it's no big deal. It just seems like something is wrong and I should be able to help him.
