Jasper's upset tummy...how can I keep him hydrated?
So late Saturday night, Jasper decided to have a little feast while we went out and in the short time we were gone managed to steal my leftovers from dinner-half of a huge steak!!! He was fine for a couple days, but yesterday he started having the runs really bad. He had an accident this morning (which he's only done twice since he was 6 weeks old) and today I've been taking him out every couple of hours and he's been trying to go each time, but only gets a little bit out and it's totally liquid. I gave him some rice last night but I'm worried about him getting dehydrated. I've heard of giving dogs something like pedialyte but I don't know how much to give or if it's safe. We're going to call the vet tomorrow, but was just wondering if anyone knew of a good way to keep him hydrated tonight.

You can try offering ice cubes; break them into pieces with a mallet if he doesn't like to crunch them. Offer one every half hour or so and see if he keeps that down.
You can do the skin-snap test to see if he's actually dehydrated; grab the skin above his shoulders, lift up and let go. It should go back into shape right away. If it does not, he's probably dehydrated. The same test works for horses.

Thanks for the link! I have been giving him ice cubes (he really likes them and usually acts like they're treats). He doesn't seem dehydrated from skin snap test (I looked at his gums too) but I'm worried that he will be if his stool doesn't get a little more normal.

Does your vet have an evening number? Sometimes they don't want them to have anything for 24 hours to get their tummy to settle down. They can inject fluids in the morning if he is dehydrated that will help right away. Hope he feels better soon!

Has he been throwing up at all? Is he drinking water? Finnigan had diarrhea for an extended period of time and even started passing blood due to the irritation. We withheld food for 24 hours then started feeding him a bland diet of white rice cooked in chicken stock (this made Finn worse only because it turns out he has a chicken intolerance but should help a normal dog), and we made sure he drank water often. Don't wait for him to go to the bowl, bring him water periodically and sometimes floating ice cubes in the water entices them to drink more. I’ve heard you can give them a pediapop (popsicle) to help rehydrate but I haven't tried it. You could put one in a bowl and let him lick at it. As long as he's not throwing up as well, he should be fine. Let us know how it goes.

He hasn't been throwing up. He ate some rice last night and I gave him some tonight but he hasn't seemed interested in eating it yet. I think his little tummy is in shock from the steak. He's not used to ever getting that much people food and the steak had a lot of spices and seasonings on it as well. I'm going to watch him tonight and in the morning and see if he improves. Pedialyte is safe and a good idea along with probiotics. Withhold food to let his system settle and can give pumpkin as well. You can give some Pepto Bismol or pepcid to settle the tummy. Make sure he isn't scrounging around the yard and getting into acorns or stuff like that causing this diarrhea. Fall time causes alot of this. You might want to take his temp. also to make sure it is irritated bowels and not an illness. Even when offering bland diets make sure it is in small amounts..over eating can still irritate his system.

Thanks for the reminder about the acorns; just one or two will give Jack loose stools, sometimes with a bit of blood.

Jasper's doing really well! No more runs! I made him a concoction of canned pumpkin, sweet potato baby food and some diarrhea medication (pet pectillin) that I found at PetsMart. I fed him that instead of his normal meal and he was totally regular within 6 hours! I continued feeding him that for 24 hours, just to be safe, but he has been fine ever since! Thanks for all the great advice! :)
