Hello all,

Kenji is our first dog, a male dog at that. My question is regarding neutering.
Kenji is currently recovering from his neuter. We had him neutered last Saturday.
My question below is a bit graphic but I am not sure how else to describe it.

The thing is, when I come home, he is usually just waking up so he is a bit aroused and whatnot.
I can see his private is hard and I notice 2 testicles next to it, one on each side. Now correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the whole purpose of neutering is to remove the testicles? Is that what I am seeing?

It is quite possible that he is still a bit swollen from his surgery. Especially if he has been able to lick it, the area will probably be bruised and swollen.
He's been wearing a cone ever since. We don't have him sit in a crate all day long. He is set inside of a playpen when we're at work. He has not licked or touched the wound or has been anywhere near it.
After his erection wears off, I don't see any sign of testicles. His scrotum is probably still a bit puffy but I was told that is normal.
I'm not sure what you are seeing, but it's not testicles. You can see dogs' testicles at all times, and they are quite obvious. You would know for certain if they were still there.
I think I found out what it is. Did a bit of Google searching and it seems to be a "knot". Something that ties the male to the female to insure impregnation. I have never seen this before but it does make sense. The location of the 2 testicles look-a-likes are located right next to the shaft and is only there when he is excited.
Can anyone confirm?
I'm laughing with you, not at you :). Yes, that's exactly what you're seeing and MANY owners have thought it was another set of testicles. Some male dogs (after neuter) very rarely get to the point that you see it, but others seem to never figure out that they're neutered and have the full set of normal excitation responses. Time will tell what he ends up doing, but what you are seeing now is completely normal and common.
Was just about to post the same thing. My neutered male will still occasionally do this.
I had precisely the same issue after Edison's neutering and called his breeder to inquire. I was mostly concerned that the neutering had been done incorrectly (I have no idea how, since testicles are, as someone put it, very obvious, but you never know). The conversation went something like this:

"Um, so I'm seeing these round things pop up sometimes and ... where would you normally find the testicles?"

Long pause. Then, in a I-can't-believe-this voice: "In the scrotum."

The conversation got even more embarrassing after that but she eventually explained that males normally get "bulbous growths" just below the penis when they're excited and not to worry about it. Afterwards, my husband (who grew up with dogs) laughed at me for what seemed like an hour. It's a bit of a relief to find out I'm not the only one!
Don't feel bad! It's true that the testicles are quite obvious in an ADULT male dog. However, when we had Jack neutered at 6 months, they were still itty-bitty and had not yet, er, "matured." So I can easily see where the uncertainty would arise. In recent years, many people might go a very long time without seeing an intact adult male dog. In an earlier time, my father did not want to neuter a male labrador we had, and when we pressed him on why, he finally said "Because he'd look funny." Great reasoning, that. The females in the family sorta laughed that he actually looked pretty funny WITH them, but there you have it. The testes actually sit further back on a male dog, nearer his butt.

I have learned a lot from this discussion! I knew it wasn't his testicles, but I didn't have a clue what you might be seeing. If you didn't grow up with dogs (like me), you learn something new all the time. Good luck with your little guy!
The first time I saw that on Finn I was shocked too. It was before he was neutered and he had an undescended testicle and I thought that may be the lump I was seeing. Ha ha! Not to fear though, the two hard lumps on either side of the scrotum are called the bulbus glandis. The tissue becomes engorged with blood during intercourse to lock the male and female together, also known as "tying". You may see this now and then but rest assured these are not the testicles, your dog has indeed been neutered. :) I think Finnigan was about 6 months old when I first saw it happen to him. He is 16 months old and neutered now and I still see it, usually when he first wakes up.
Both my dogs have this and both times I noticed it I said the same thing. The look like smaller testicles right at the end of the shaft and under the skin but not hanging down a bit like regular testicles.
So that's it.... the bulbus glandis!!! I knew it couldn't be what I thought it was either after Edward had his procedure 2 months ago. I thought my husband might know...but he just looks at me like I'm Corgi crazy all the time so I am glad I was paying attention to the site today!
