Frosty and the skunk, any suggestions??
Frosty decided to tangle with a skunk this morning. Yuck. I have super extra strength shampoo specifically for skunk smell removal, but it didn't work very well. Have also tried tomato juice, but that just made a mess and didn't seem to help the smell either. Don't know where I'm going to stick him tonight, cause I'll tell you right now, he's not sleeping in my room!! lol. Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I just keep bathing him with the shampoo over and over til the smell goes away?

I can't remember for sure but I had a dog get sprayed 3 times in one week and I think we used a bottle of peroxide and dish soap(maybe a cup) mixed...the dog still had to sleep in the basement!

I've heard that a combination of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and dish soap can actually work. You can find a "recipe" at a bunch of different websites and it seems to get the best reviews by people. It is also recommended by some of my vet tech friends. If it does work, I would get some sort of conditioning product for him as well though, since that will probably dry out his skin and coat. Good luck though, that smell can be pretty brutal and it seems to make everything in your house smell as well! I hope Frosty learned his lesson haha!

This happens all the time in northern Minnesota, where I grew up (partially). Here's the traditional remedy:
Get some not-too recently dead fish skins or fish guts (everybody fishes up there). It should be a few days old, and quite, uh, ripe. Smear this stuff all over the dog, work it well into its fur. The short-chain unsaturated fatty acids in the rotting fish oil and fish slime bind the skunk musk. Do not wash this off immediately! Let it dry on the fur for at least 12 hrs., preferably a day. Then wash it off. Voila! Skunk smell gone.
It's a lot easier than a porcupine.

To remove skunk smell from Corgis:
1 bottle of peroxide.
1 cup of baking soda
1 tablespoon of dawn dishwashing liquid
Mix in a bowl, apply liberally to Corgi. Let sit for 3 - 5 minutes. Rinse. Then wash with conditioning shampoo. (The Peroxide dries out their skin.)
We have used this to remove skunk from the pack on several occasions. The Peroxide must be a fresh, unopened bottle for best results. The results were good enough for the affected corgis to resume sleeping on the bed.

Oh dear! Edison defended us from a skunk a few months ago and we had nothing useful on hand so we had to improvise with a can of Campbell's condensed tomato soup. Things we heard suggested:
- hydrogen peroxide
- very dilute bleach (1% Clorox) (we didn't use it because the spray site was too near his eyes)
- shave the dog (no, we didn't!)
You may have to give Frosty multiple baths just to make him habitable and even then it may take some time for the smell to fade entirely. Edison's smell faded to a sort of peanut-oil scent which stuck around for nearly a month, coming out more strongly when he got wet..

My sister's Basenji get skunked all the time...I just e-mailed her for the recipe. It does contain peroxide, and dish soap, but I think you have to be careful bout what type of peroxide you use.

Peroxide, baking soda and dish soap is the recipe I have used to get rod off skunk smell on dogs before. However, you should also check on Frosty for signs of irritation in his eyes and skin.

Well, we have bathed Frosty with the peroxide/baking soda/dish soap concoction and then again with the skunk remover shampoo. He's back outside drying off again. Hopefully we'll be able to bring him back in the house by tonight.

A bottle of peroxide, a box of baking soda and a capful of baby shampoo, Mix together and (try) to leave on the dog for 10-15 minutes. Rinse. The baby shampoo doesn't affect their eyes so you can really scrub around the face
