On our 2mile walk Nikki decides she's had enough and plops down in the grass a mile from home!So not wanting to stand and wait for her to recuperate I carry her butt half a mile while walking another dog at a rapid pace til it appears she is ready to go again Then she paces all night at home!

Sidney does this when it's warm out. We call it "going flat dog", and he did it today for the first time since last autumn. He usually only needs a minute or two to get going again. You should carry some water with you, and try to walk when it is cooler out. Maybe if you carry some tasty treats you can entice Nikki get up after a short rest. Those little legs are great for sprinting after sheep but maybe need a little rest on a longer haul. Hopefully John Wolff will chime in...he always gives great advice!
Our neighbor's Great Pyrenees would do that and at 150 lbs it meant you had to wait it out!
Seanna does it when she's stalling and doesn't want to go home...:-)
Cody does it too, hes never ready to go home he likes to play outside
Ours do this. I play ball with them in the late evening and they still flop down after a while. Then an hour later inside they want to play again lol.
Noodles does this when it is warm out and by warm, I don't mean in the 80s or 90s. He did this not too long ago when we had our first warm weather (temps in the 70s) and he lays down in the shade of the trees and rolls over on his back. I always laugh because it is pretty funny. I know when he is going to do it because he heads over to the trees and starts dragging his back legs until he finally lays down. He just needs to rest a bit, but I think he likes doing this as well since people always come over and start petting his belly. Yup, he has it figured out how to get attention. (like he is lacking in that area) :)
I am so glad to hear this - Tootsie just stared this and it isn't even that warm out but she must have been exhausted. I thought she did it for the attention also as everyone walking past would laugh!!!!!!!!!!
I wanted to post my favorite "flat dog" picture. See how he's grinning like a lunatic?

This is the EXACT same look Noodles gives me. Thank you for the chuckle this morning!
we're actually glad to hear that others do this too. we have two girls, and one, Luna, is prone to going "flat dog" on even short walks. She pulls over to the right and lays down. She's the crybaby anyway though, and you can never tell how long a walk you can plan to avoid the "flat dog".
I think it was the heat. She was fine last autumn and previously this year on this walk. She gets a drink at the river on our walk but I'll have to just do shorter walks twice a day maybe. I love the flat dog picture! Yes treats would entice her. I have to try hard at keeping her from thinking all treats are for her and not the other dog too! Does anyone else have any bulliness in their dogs? I have heard another lady say that they can be aggressive towards other dogs. I'm just learning about this breed as I've only known about them in the past couple years.
Well, they are herding dogs, and Sidney does exhibit some herding behaviors. It's not aggression on his part, he's just acting on instinct. The one that surprised me the most was, when we are walking our three dogs, our big dog Chester (lab/dane) tends to get huffy and posture at other dogs as we walk past their yards. Whenever he does this, Sidney will run towards CHester and jump at his head in an effort to herd him away from the other dog. It's like SId is telling him "oh no you don't keep moving, we have no business here" and then we keep walking and everything is great. At first glance it looks like a viscious attack but it's just a quick redirection.

And then he goes flat dog on us. Keeping his pack in line is such hard work, LOL!
