Poisonous Plants
I need some help finding out what plants are safe for dogs. We're getting ready to replace some trees in our backyard and add some other plants and for the trees we were thinking of Shamel Ash and Purple Leaf Plum but I cannot find if they are poisonous to dogs or not. Anyone know about these trees or know of a good toxic plant list? The two lists I found listed toxic and non-toxic but these trees weren't in either catagory.

What I have done is gone online and looked up the plants and also maybe gone under poisonous plants...can't remember! Could you ask a nursery? Good luck...I'll be interested in knowing how you found out!

I looked all over online and found a lot of info about the plants but not whether or not they are poisonous. I also found a couple toxic plant lists that list both toxic and non-toxic, one of which was the aspca but these weren't on either list. As a matter of fact, I checked other trees sold at local nurseries and most are not on the lists. I emailed the nursery but have not heard back yet.
The trees that we have now are grapefruit and orange (we already removed the lemon) and Finn eats the leaves and the unripe fruit that drops. I'm not entirely sure whether or not this is ok with the grapefruit. I read that grapefruit is ok but the leaves are not. ?? Anyway, the grapefruit tree is the only one I like and would consider keeping but with as much as it drops and Finn the vacuum sucking it up, I think it may be better to replace it too with something more clean. Plus the blooms attract too many bees which Finn snaps at and that's just asking for trouble. Ugh, I didn't think it would be so hard to pick trees!

I usually google what I'm looking for with the words "safe dogs" or "toxic dogs" and do a variety of searches til I find what I'm looking for. So I might google "Purple Leaf Plum safe dogs".
Keep in mind, too, that it depends what part of the plant is poisonous, and what the affect would be. Rhododendrons are supposedly toxic to dogs, but I have yet to meet one that will try to eat one.
Acorns, on the other hand, cause tummy trouble even though they are not likely to be deadly, and many dogs love to nibble on acorns (and Jack gets the runs to prove it each September when our neighbor's trees start to drop unripe ones and he manages to grab a few on a walk). Apple seeds contain arsenic and many dogs will eat apples.
So, while the list of "toxic" plants is long, many will be ignored by dogs and others cause minor problems like burning mouth or mild tummy upset that aren't likely to be a big problem

I tried all the searches I could think of and didn't find anything out. I'm really surprised! Usually I can find anything online. The Purple Plum Tree is also called Ornamental plum so I tried that too with no luck. Shamel Ash (also called Mexican Ash or Fraxinus Uhdei) is in the olive family according to one site, which I had no idea of, but I can't find if olive trees are poisonous either. It's very frustrating. I've searched every way I can think of!
