Hey Guys!

My mom informed me tonight that at thanksgiving we are doing the 6 hour drive to Mass. to see my aunt for the holiday! Harlequin will only be about 11 1/2 weeks old when this trip happens! Do you have any suggestions about a trip like this for such a young age?

Thank you!

Is he crate trained? If so the trip will be a breeze! If not, you have a month to crate train him :-) Franklin flew on an airplane at only 8 weeks of age and did just fine because he was crate trained. We also took him on a 12 hour trip when he was about 12 weeks and he was fine on that too. Just make sure to stop at least once for a potty break on your 6 hour trip, 2 or 3 times would be better if he isn't crate trained. Don't feed him before you leave just in case he gets car sick.
Oh yes! she will be crate trained. We are taking our 5 yr old lab too so there will be potty breaks! Would it be bad if i spoiled her and let her sit in my lap? That's my plan for when I go pick her up in 2 weeks! lol
I dont think so. As long as she is calm there. Sometimes they don't want to sit and sleep and want to wander around so that's when they should be crated with a toy. I kept Franklin on my lap on the drive home from the airport. He was happy as a clam and so was I!
My mom was talking about renting a mini van for this trip. I assume I could put down one of the chairs and set up her crate inside of the van with her next to me! That way I can keep an eye on her... oh dear, I feel like I am going to be a helicopter mom lol
Crates are the best...I would get her used to it right away but that's my opinion. When we got Wynn we spent many times traveling that summer and he still loves his crate and will crawl in it every time he gets in the car. You don't have to worry about them. This is what has worked the greatest for me:)
the only problem I think I am going to have is... my mom is having surgery on her knee like 5 days before the trip! Why she wants to travel up there after that is beyond me! lol I guess I worry that if I set up the crate it would be in her way of getting out of the van. But I'm crafty and I'm sure if I move the crate out of the way it would be okay...
Should I pack her a special kong before we go? Maybe some peanut butter and couple treats.. keep it in a baggie til she is settled in and give it to her after a stop?
Sounds like you're really planning ahead and that is great. If she is used to a kong with peanut butter by then that would be a great idea:) She will sleep most of the trip I believe with a couple of stops for potty and water she should do fine. A favorite blanket and stuffed toy and the trip should go well as long as she already has gotten used to the crate! Mine all love to travel so maybe even short trips/drives before then would be a great idea also. You are going to be a very responsible corgi owner...thanks!

As for your mom...I hope she feels good also!
Aww, that was Edison's age when we first got him- and promptly drove 4 hours to my in-laws' house. :) If you haven't driven w/Harlequin before, keep the following in mind:

1) Some dogs get carsick. Very few, but keep a few towels in the car just in case.
2) Keeping Harlequin in your lap won't be spoiling him, but I recommend only doing that in a seat where you don't have airbags- they can do serious damage to him if he's in your lap. (Also, it gives him the opportunity to chew on the lock button. :D) As much as I adore cuddling my puppy-boy, we keep Edison in the footspace on car trips, just in case- our passenger seat is cranked all the way back, to the point where I think Shaq could sit there comfortably! :)
3) Make sure that he has a "lie down" or "floor" command mastered before you go. Corgis like to know what's going on, and Edison tends to climb up onto my lap or the gearshift whenever the car slows down ("Ooh! We're going to be at a new place! I must see!"), which can be very exciting on a manual transmission- he has shifted the car out of gear before! :)
4) Don't leave the dog in the car alone with a key remote. Edison has also accidentally locked our car from the inside- fortunately, I was also inside, so it was no big deal.

Reading this over, I realize, I sound kinda paranoid. These are just things to watch out for, just in case! The truth is, Edison is the best car trip companion I've ever had- he just curls up in the passenger side foot rest, and sleeps, or stares trustingly at us, and is generally a darling the whole time. Happy travels!
also add...lock the windows so they can't step on this and the window opens as you are going down the road...happens alot to me when we go from one house to the other(only a mile)
1. Traveling crate with an old t-shirt as liners.
2. 2 bottles of Hydrogen peroxide for clean up at Aunt's place.
3. Avoid tall grassy area, fleas and ticks = no fun.
4. Keep a photocopy of shots record and other medical info in your glovebox.
5. Microchip your dog if you have not already done so, collar can be taken off, but not microchip.
6. Pre measured your dog meal in zip lock bags.
7. Febreeze, lint rollers, always keep water in the van.
8. Anti bacterial hand wash for you, wet wipes and paper towel.
9. tiny led headlamps, poop bags.
10. Always leash your dog before opening car doors.
Well my boyfriend does say that I love to be over pre-prepared lol which is so true I love to figure things out and then have alternatives to the situation. Harley is going to be microchipped at her first vet visit! We are going to be taking our lab too so all the doors will be locked. Past minivans we have rented don't allow to let the back windows to go down, so she won't be messin around with those! As soon as I bring her home from the breeder we are going right into working on crate training and taking her a lot of little rides to get used to being in the car and such. Also I'm not the one doing the drive! So I don't have to worry about her wanting to climb around any of the front the car.
Should I put a puppy pad down on the bottom of the crate? just in case of accidents, which ya know can happen! I think the hardest part is going to be picking out her toys that she wants to take lol She has 2 baby blankets, so that's covered. My aunt does have a 10 yr old Lab/Airdale mix but I planned on them meeting outside in a natural setting so there aren't any complications. My aunt also has a 6 and 3 yr old... is there any particular way that I should introduce them to her? I don't want it to become too much and then down the line her having a fear of children! Thank you all for the suggestions I've received thus far. Keeps the wheels turning in my head :D
It wouldn't hurt to put a puppy pad under the blanket...just in case it would be an easier clean-up. We have 8 grandchildren and what I do is let the kids see and hold with an adult always present. I am always afraid of a child tripping or dropping so it depends but if you look at my pics you will see how they love the children. Make sure that the pup is crated when you can't be right there to moniter. My dogs prefer kids over other dogs...at the pet stores it's all about the kids, forget the dogs:)
