Franklin likes to play fetch but he won't play fetch with normal toys. He insists on playing with sticks, rocks, and pine cones. I really want to teach him that fetching a tennis ball is just as fun (if not more fun) than fetching a stick. Has anyone ever taught their reluctant corgi to fetch a ball? I find that fetch is a great outlet for his energy and I just can't throw a stick as far as a ball and he's injured himself a couple of times trying to pick up a stick at a full run and so I'm looking for a safer method of fetch. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

An addition:

Casey fetches really well in the house, but not outside. I think this is due to three things: first, we fetch with a toy in the house, and we tug with the toy when she returns it. The tug when she returns it is the reward for bringing it back, so she's actually motivated to go get it and bring it back to me. Second, we were very clear about the rules of fetch in the house. If she refused to bring the toy back, tried to wander off with it, stopped to chew it, or anything else, the toy was removed and the game stopped. She learned quickly that if she wanted to continue to play with me and the toy, that she needed to follow my rules (ie - bringing it back). Third, we always stop before she loses interest. The game will be much more exciting and you'll keep her interested if you stop before she loses interest in the game. Then the next time you start it up, she'll remember loving it, and being left wanting more.

One final thought: my puppy class instructor was quite adamant that if you were going to teach your dog to play fetch, either the dog or the toy should be on leash/attached to a string. That way, if the dog decides it's going to wander off, you don't have to chase it for the toy (which now suddenly becomes a fun game of keep away). If the dog doesn't bring it back, the game ends and the toy goes away. This way they learn that the only way to keep playing is to follow your rules.
Fetch is Livvy's passion! She really lives for it and I don't remember how it started but she is the best. we have a Fetch It ball launcher and she will run forever. Just start playing/bouncing and make it fun then if you get his attention you can work on getting them to bring it to you and other rules such as "closer" livvy learned fast because she loved it so much. I might have a video of her playing catch on my page. Good luck...it's so much fun!
Penny LOVES to play fetch and tennis balls are her favorite! She used to drop the ball at my feet, but I have a bad back and bending over is tough...so I've taught her that she has to put it in my hand...sometimes she will rebel and drop it at my feet and then bark at me to pick it up...but I just wait for her to "hand it" to me. I've also been working on her with a cloth frisbee and she has even managed to catch it a few times!
Check out the group: Corgis that live to play fetch...maybe you will want to join at some point:)
Conan absolutely loves fetch with anything. Usually the more excited I act about the toy, the more he wants it. He also seems to like larger items to fetch with. I think he sometimes had trouble finding the tennis ball. His favorite is a frisbee and he will try to catch it as he runs (his height works against him though and he rarely succeeds). The frisbee works out great for us because we can throw it very far. He is usually tuckered out after about 5 mins. He also likes the soccer ball and if we kick it for him, he will keep it moving around the yard by himself until a tree or something stops it. Then we kick it again.

I think when we taught him how to fetch we demonstrated it (I would throw and my husband would run after it and Conan would follow him). The only problem we have had is sometimes he wants to play tug-of-war with the fetch toy once he returns it. We trained him to "leave it" to fix this (he drops it on the ground and has to avoid temptation to grab it when I pick it up).
Loki will play fetch with a ball. But you have to tell him the command " drop it" or he will try to play keep away instead. He wants you to chase him. Sometimes he will take his ball to the stairs drop it then look at you like; Well are you going to fetch it?
Ginger would play fetch all day long if I had the stamina! She'll run and chase anything we throw, but she'll only bring her balls back. Whenever she wants to play she'll follow us around with her ball in her mouth. The only problem is she doesn't drop the ball. We have to pry it out of her mouth. We've been working on that and I make sure to make a huge fuss (in a good way) whenever she drops it. Maybe you could get some kind of dog toy that looks like a stick with a ball on the end?
In a word, no. Beneath their dignity I think.
Kirby loves to play fetch. But she enjoys playing it with her big bird (named Franklin by chance) and her monkey with rope arms. She'll play fetch with her tennis ball but not nearly as enthusiastically. And if we take it outside, well, it's done then. She's too busy smelling the ground, looking for squirrels, watching other people, trying to eat the odd bit of something, etc. Then if I throw the ball or toy she looks at me like "Are you crazy? That's mine! Don't give that to the squirrels! They are the ENEMY!"
I think LO has a gene that made him know how to play fetch from the very beginning, he loves it and would play all day if he could,.
Skye only brings it back when she feels like it.... :) She mainly run and touches whatever you throw for her and then walks away...
Caius loves playing fetch. He's great at sitting and staying, chasing the toy, and bringing it back: the only issue is that he won't drop the toy! Him and I occasionally do a tugging match until he gives up or I snatch it when he stops chewing on it. He's listened once or twice when I said, "Let Go." Nothing out of the ordinary from that though...
