hi all,

is there any harm to getting my corgi snipped at 7 months instead of waiting for a year?  are there any benefits of waiting for a full year before snipping him?

my breeder had mentioned that it was best to wait for a full year this way all his growth hormones are all sorted out.  is this even true?  i'm considering getting him snipped because even tho he doesn't pee in my apartment, he marks my friends' places that have dogs and obviously, that isn't exactly welcomed guest behavior!  so instead of having to keep an eye on him at all times or leaving him outside by himself at my friends' places, i'm considering getting him neutered very soon.

any opinions or suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated!

thanks
kent

My breeder and Vet said anytime from 6 mo's on is good. That's when I had Bailey neutered and he's doing great.
Olive's breeder felt that it was very important to her overall developement to wait until she was at least 7 to 9 months old. It's something about the growth plate closure and if they are spayed/neutered before that they continue to grow at a rate that is not in their best interest. Sam sent me a web site that you might want to google that talks about the issue in a scientific perspective.
It is recommended by a lot of breeders to wait until they are a year, but I think you would be fine having him neutered now.

We're waiting for a year, just because after Aber's back problems (2 ruptured discs at 9 1/2 yrs) and the reading I've done, I'm nervous not to make sure Ragnar is done growing and his bone structure is good and strong from the hormones. Chances are, he won't have the same problems, but now I'm gun shy and if there's anything I can do to make sure it doesn't happen to this dog, then I'll do it.I've also heard agility trainers wait until a year for similar reasons. Of course, he isn't marking or doing anything appalling which makes it easier as a decision.

Our vet said 6-9 months because it's easier on them recovery wise. Pups just bounce back better.
You will find good information to support both positions. There are pros and cons to neutering early and to waiting.
There is no problem getting him neutered at 7 months! Some people even do it when they are 8 weeks but that is a little young. Vets recommend between 4-6 months. Go ahead and snip that puppy! Word of warning since corgis are chow hounds. After they are neutered or spayed (female equivalent), their metabolism drops 25% so you have to be careful they don't get chunky.
thanks for all the responses! so he only pees in one friend's house and i think it's because her dogs pee in the house, so he's just going with the flow. he doesn't mark my workplace or my parents' place or anywhere else. so little körvik gets to keep his berries a little longer since it seems most do seem to lean towards at least a year and the bone growth issue is a concern. thanks again!
